April Pack the Backpack Winner: Mrs. Hand

Pack the Backpack, presented by Central Office Supply, a division of Minuteman and Kix 101.1! Each month during the school year, we will be awarding $101 to a Kix Country classroom to help out with supplies. We will award the prize on the last Wednesday of the month. You can listen to each new winner at 8:30a on the Morning Kix Start.

Our April winner is GMG Elementary 2nd Grade Teacher, Mrs. Hand. She was nominated by a parent, Jessica Slifer, who wrote to Kix 101.1:

I’d love to nominate Mrs. Hand, a 2nd grade teacher at GMG elementary school in Green Mountain.

Mrs. Hand deserves to win because she takes teaching to a whole new level! 2nd graders are at a delicate learning age where reading is really taking off for them & they are starting to learn new subjects like science & history. Mrs. Hand really takes the time to work with each individual student with their own individual learning abilities to make sure they all get what they need to succeed. Her teachings are prime examples of the saying “no child left behind.”

At the beginning of the school year, she let the parents know that she will try to have the kids do all their work while in school so they have more family time in the evenings. She understands that with parents’ busy work schedules & kids activities/sports that doesn’t leave much time for the kids to unwind each evening & have family time. By doing the work in class it opens up a little bit of time for the families in the evenings.

Mrs. Hand is an experienced teacher who found her calling in life as a teacher. She has a class room of kids that adore her & parents that appreciate her. I truly hope you consider her for this amazing program, I couldn’t think of a better teacher who deserves it, thank you!!

Class room needs: Paper (computer paper, construction paper, notebooks), #2 pencils, erasers, Kleenex, disinfecting wipes & paper towels.

Jessica Slifer

Take a listen to our surprise interview with Mrs. Hand below!

Nominate your Kix Country class by submitting a letter to us at backpack@kixweb.com.

The List for Monday, April 24th 2023

Welcome to The List,

How does she do it!!??  You probably think 53-year-old Jennifer Lopez follows a strict diet to look so good.  But it turns out, it's just her superhuman genetics. On "The Drew Barrymore Show" Friday, Ben Affleck said J-Lo eats whatever she wants.  Quote, "She eats pizza, cookies, ice cream . . . everything . . ."She works out, but I work out too . . . but I don't magically appear to be 20 years old, you know what I mean?  With perfect skin and the whole thing.”

-----

Morgan Wallen took a tumble during a show in Louisville, Kentucky Thursday night.  But don't worry . . . he will NOT die. He was in the middle of the song "Heartless", and the stage was covered in fog.  It looks like he tripped on something, but he's a pro.  He only missed one line before he popped back up and kept going. Someone up front posted a video of it, and he was fine.  He immediately laughed it off and high-fived a fan. Here's the video.

-----

Well, it looks like the film “Rust” has started filming again…the question everyone is asking is  why is there a picture of Alec Baldwin holding a rifle BACKWARDS on the set? We don’t know exactly…but he has everyone behind him running for cover…

-----

Carrie Underwood is…kind of a ‘homebody’ she tells Apple Music Country that her husband encourages her to get out of the house.  She loves her home and would literally never leave it.  Group settings and crowds make her nervous.  Her husband has got a million friends and we're always hanging out with them. So yeah, I feel like we balance each other out."

-----

Luke Bryan's miniature pony, Carl, recently died. Luke's wife, Caroline, posted; We had to lay our sweetest little man, Carl, to rest. Carl was blind in his right eye for several years, but recently he was kicked in the left eye by another animal, leaving him completely blind and in a lot of pain. Carl was not doing well adapting to the blindness, so we decided it was best to lay our precious little old man to rest.”

-----

Been seeing video of people that are planning to run for President in 2024. Including the guy that says he’s going to ‘cut the price of eggs in half’ and don’t think it’s not appreciated.  The latest is Afroman he’s completed filing the necessary paperwork to run in 2024…. . And if he loses, he's got a built-in excuse.

You can catch the List, weekdays at 2:20 and 4:20 on Iowa’s BEST Country KIX 101.1

The List for Friday, April 21st 2023

Welcome to The List,

Involuntary manslaughter charges against Alec Baldwin for fatally shooting "Rust" cinematographer Halyna Hutchins have been dropped. For now, They said they found "new facts that . . . demand further investigation and forensic analysis."  But once it's done, they CAN refile charges against him. There's been no change in the charges against the movie's armorer, Meanwhile, production on "Rust" resumed yesterday . . . but they moved it from New Mexico to Montana.

-----

Brett Young Jokes that may have gotten into the wrong career… “People were using both ‘In Case You Didn’t Know’ and ‘Lady’ as their first dance and father/daughter dance. And I’m going, ‘Am I in the wrong business? Should I just try to write like a full soundtrack for people’s weddings? Is that what we’re moving towards (laugh).’”

-----

Prince William says he has one big regret in life. The Daily Mail quotes him as saying, ''I still wish I'd learned to breakdance. It's one of my greatest regrets, not learning to breakdance when I was young.”

-----

Stop me if you've heard this one:  "Stranger Things" meets . . . "Cocoon"???

The Duffer Brothers . . . the guys behind "Stranger Things" . . . are developing a new show for Netflix called "The Boroughs".  It's about residents at a retirement community in New Mexico who have to band together to stop some kind of otherworldly menace that wants to steal the one thing they don't have much of:  time.

-----

Luke Combs is embarking on a weight loss journey. Music Mayhem magazine quotes him as saying, “I wanna be runnin’ around the yard with my children [and] I wanna take my son on an elk hunt when he’s 16 years old and hike up a mountain when I’m in my late 40s. [I] wanna do that with him. And I know right now I can’t and that bugs me.''

-----

Megan Moroney gives up the secret behind 'Tennessee Orange' she says it’s her version of a love song… "So Tennessee Orange is about me being a Georgia girl. I was born and raised in Georgia and I graduated from the University of Georgia. And I moved to Nashville for music and I met and fell for a Tennessee boy so this is kind of my version of a love song." Now…we know…

The List for Thursday, April 20th 2023

Welcome to The List,

Miranda Lambert tells Billboard magazine that she and Jelly Roll are writing new music together. Saying how she felt a connection to him as a kindred spirit.  He’s a great songwriter and was happy to hear their song DID make his new album. It’s fun to, this far into the game, to still collaborate and meet new people and this younger generation of artists who are emerging and learning new things from them and stay fresh. It feels cool to be part of that.”

-----

A new tell-all book about the Royal Family claims money is the reason Prince Harry and his father, King Charles, are feuding. Royals’ reporter Robert Jobson claims King Charles refused to put Meghan Markle on the Royals payroll. He writes, "When the Queen asked Charles why he hadn't given in, he told her that he wasn't a bank." …Kids…whatcha gonna do..am I right?

-----

With the ‘Barbie’ movie coming out you HAD to see this coming…Retail Dive says Mattel and The Gap are teaming for a Barbie clothing collection. The new line will be available on the Gap's website starting on May 23rd. A clothing collection based on Mattel's Hot Wheel toys is also in development.

-----

Lainey Wilson's appearance on "Yellowstone" could win her an Emmy.  I'm not talking about her acting, though.  One of the songs she performed, "Smell Like Smoke", was submitted for nomination in the Outstanding Music and Lyrics category.  Still no word on when the second half of season five will begin filming.

-----

Luke Bryan was on Tuesday's "Jimmy Kimmel Show", and they listened to a song created by artificial intelligence.  It was supposed to be inspired by Luke's music, but it wasn't even close. On the bright side, if this is the future of A.I. music, real artists have nothing to worry about…and it didn’t say ANYTHING about…mama, trains, or trucks, or prison or getting drunk…

-----

Last week we heard about the "Harry Potter" HBO TV series.  Now, there's a "Twilight" TV series in the works. It's still in the early stages so there's no word if it's a direct remake of the books or a spin-off. But, we can almost guarantee sparkly vampires…
