October Pack the Backpack Winner: Mrs. Ruby Johnson

Pack the Backpack, presented by Central Office Supply, a division of Minuteman and Kix 101.1! Each month during the school year, we will be awarding $101 to a Kix Country classroom to help out with supplies. We will award the prize on the last Wednesday of the month. You can listen to each new winner at 8:30a on the Morning Kix Start.

Our October winner is 3rd Grade Teacher at South Hamilton Elementary, Ruby Johnson. She was nominated by her co-worker, Alison Hassebrock, who wrote to Kix 101.1:

Hi Kix 101.1!  I would like to nominate Rebecca (Ruby) Johnson, a third grade teacher at South Hamilton Elementary School in Jewell, Iowa.  Ruby is a busy mother of five and all of her children are active and just as generous as their mother.  Ruby teaches more than just academics.  Mrs. Johnson teaches students to love, to be kind, to make good choices, and to love life!  She is as adventurous as her students! An avid hiker, climber, kayaker, bicyclist and runner, Ruby doesn’t slow down.  She welcomes third graders every morning with her warm smile.  Ruby teaches science and it is not unusual to hear about the crayfish she has students investigating.  She also hatches Monarch butterflies and will care for just about any living creature while teaching her students to do the same.  Mrs. Johnson is an example of what teaching really is.  She believes everyone can learn, everyone can do great things, and everyone deserves the best.  I nominate Mrs. Johnson because she is an educator who always gives it her all, goes the extra mile, and she is an educator I respect and look up to.  Please consider Ruby for this honor.

Regards,

Alison Hassebrock

First Grade Teacher

The List for Tuesday, August 26th 2025

Welcome to The List,

Tom Cruise is reportedly working on a prenup for Ana de Armas… before he even pops the question. The plan is: she says yes, and a lawyer walks in with a stack of paperwork thicker than a "Mission Impossible" script. Look, he’s crazy about her, but, he wants everything in writing. Honestly, Tom’s love language “Sign here, initial there.”

-----

Lainey Wilson almost bought a jet ski on impulse… because that’s what beer does to people. She and her fiancé Duck were at their favorite restaurant when she saw someone cruise in on a turquoise jet ski and said, “We’re gettin’ one!” But by the time she finished her beer, Duck had talked her out of it.  You know you’ve got a keeper when he stops you from buying floating money pits.

-----

Aaron Lewis is going after Bruce Springsteen, saying he “duped us all” with Born in the USA…calling it one of the most anti-American songs ever. Which is wild, because half the country still thinks it’s a fist-pumping patriotic anthem. I guess the real American tradition is… not reading the lyrics before cranking it at a barbecue.

-----

So Snoop Dogg takes his grandson to see Disney’s Lightyear… and his grandson asks, “Papa Snoop, how does a woman have a baby with a woman?” Snoop’s response? “Eat your popcorn, lil man.” He told a podcast he’s scared to even go to the movies now, because kids ask questions he can’t answer. Imagine Snoop, high as a kite, sweating in a Pixar theater like, “Man, I just wanted Buzz Lightyear, not a biology exam.”

You can catch The List, weekday afternoons at 4:20 with Jonathan Knight. Only on Iowa’s BEST Country KIX 101.1

Helen & Portland 8/28/2025

Our KIX Critters of the week are Helen and Portland!!

Both females are FIV+ but it's not a death sentence for either of these two cuties!! Jodi explains what FIV is and the fact that FIV+ cats can be adopted with other cats. She does state that you should talk to your vet about it, first. I suggested to adopt the two together!! Their adoption fee is only $25.00 each!! More information

Portland

Portland is a playful, affectionate cat with a funny personality and the cutest little hops. She’s FIV-positive, which means she has a weaker immune system and needs a bit of extra care, but it doesn’t stop her from enjoying life to the fullest. She loves being petted, chasing toy mice, and soaking up attention.

Portland would do great as the only cat or in a home with other FIV-positive kitties. She’s spayed, up to date on vaccinations, and microchipped—ready to find her forever home.

If you’re looking for a sweet, spirited companion, Portland is your girl!

Helen

Helen is a sweet and friendly 2-year-old cat who came in with her three adorable kittens, all of whom have since been adopted. Helen is a big fan of head scratches and cuddles—she’ll happily come right up to you for some love. She enjoys lounging in her bed, but also loves curling up with people for some extra warmth and attention.

Helen has tested positive for FIV, which means she needs a little extra care due to a weakened immune system. She’d do well in a home with other FIV-positive cats or as the only cat, soaking up all the attention! Helen is spayed, up-to-date on her vaccinations, and microchipped, so she’s ready for her next adventure with a loving family.

If you’re looking for a sweet companion who loves affection, Helen could be the perfect match!
