Last night the Marshalltown City Council pulled two items from the Consent Agenda, one of them was about the Council using LOST funds for an additional year of the Flock public safety camera system. Concerned citizen, Layne Pieri, came forward to speak right away.
Pieri’s concern is about a rogue officer or an agency using the information collected beyond its intended purpose.
Pieri notes that Mountain View is not the only place this has occurred. This example does show that the software changes can happen without the knowledge of the local organization. Police Chief Chris Jones also spoke on the issue and a few points Pieri had made.
Chief Jones says he knows that departments across the state have terminated people due to improper use of these systems, but he is not aware of a case like that within the Marshalltown Police Department.
Councilor Sue Cahill then asked the Chief directly about sharing information with ICE, Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The Council then voted 6-1, Yepez-Gomez the lone no vote, to approve the transfer of funds to fund the Flock Camera system for another year at roughly $190,000.
