People may be traveling this holiday season and leaving their homes for a night or even a whole week. Thieves want to take advantage of those situations. There are things that homeowners can do to help deter thieves. Sargent Chris Roush with the Marshalltown Police Department says the first deterrent is community.
You watch out for them, and they can help watch out for you. Another tip is just not letting people know what you have or when you will be gone.
He suggests to save posting any pictures or messages on social media until after your trip. He says the Marshalltown Police Department does offer a service when people are out of town.
This will have the Police Department drive by your home a few times while you are gone. If there is something suspicious, they will then reach out to you.
