The Marshalltown Fire Department was called to 809 Washington St. at 1:50 this morning for a residential fire.  Once on scene fire fighters found a 1.5 story home with smoke showing from the roof.  According to the release, fire crews entered the structure and found a hot and smoldering fire in the attic space.

Crews needed to open an area of the wall and ceiling at the top of the staircase to extinguish the fire.  The origin of the fire was behind the wall and the cause was found to be an electrical wire failure on a light switch.  A total of four adults live in that house, three were home at the time of the fire and all escaped safely.

Fire fighters were on scene for about 1.5 hours and were assisted by Marshalltown Police, UnityPoint EMS, and Alliant Energy
