LIHEAP started on October 1st, which is an energy assistance program for low-income individuals. This is a federal program people can apply for to get a 1 time payment to help with their utilities bill over the winter time. Abra Dougherty, Resource Development and Communications Coordinator with M.I.C.A., wants people to know who can apply in October.
She says once November 1st hits, everyone is eligible to apply. LIHEAP will go to those who are below 200% of the poverty line, and Dougherty says they will work with people to figure that out. She says approved households are protected by a moratorium November 1st – April 1st.
Dougherty says this is just a 1 time payment for people over the winter, this does not replace paying your utilities bill. To learn more, people can head to micaonline.org or give them a call at (641) 752-7162
