September is Suicide Prevention Month and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office will deal with mental health crisis throughout the year. In 2024 the Marshall County Sheriffs Office were dispatched to 124 mental health crises, so far this year they are at 91.
That is Marshall County Sheriff Joel Phillips, and he says that process is when law enforcement, the courts, and healthcare professionals have determined a person is a danger to themselves or others. Sheriff Phillips says as the season changes to winter, they see more welfare checks on individuals.
Sheriff Phillips shares a National Statistic that shows suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for people ages 10 – 14 and in the ages 15 – 24. People who are struggling can call or text 9-8-8 to reach the suicide crisis line 24/7.
