The Ames City Council Tuesday unanimously approved a contract with San Francisco-based ForeFront Power to begin construction of a two-megawatt community solar farm. It’s the first project of its kind in Ames.

According to the city, construction is estimated to take nine to 12 months, depending on a second approval notice from the Federal Aviation Administration, and is set for completion by early summer 2020.

The Ames solar farm will be modeled after the Cedar Falls Utility, Iowa’s largest community solar project. It will allow a for-profit company to build and own the solar project, and sell the city the solar power.
