A Miller Middle School teacher will be heading for France next month, to give a eulogy for someone she did not know about until recently…and she could use your help.

Ann Jackson is one of 18 teachers taking part in a program for National History Day called “Memorializing The Fallen”. Sponsored by the World War I Centennial Commission, the goal is to help teachers and therefore, students to rediscover the history of that war.

Jackson will be going to an American Cemetery in France to deliver a eulogy for Private Frederick Ekstrom of Marshalltown. He was in the country for four years when he was drafted and was killed his first night on the front lines.

Jackson says she found a niece of Ekstrom’s in Michigan but is looking for info on someone else in Marshall County. D.V. McLean was a farmer in LaMoille, who hired Ekstrom to work for him.

Jackson says her research is like doing some genealogy work, but only in reverse, adding sites like Ancestry.com have info about dead relatives, but not live relatives.

If you can help here in regards to D.V. McLean, you may email Ann at ajackson@marshalltown.k12.ia.us.
