On September 22, 2016 at 6:23 am officers with the Marshalltown Police Department responded to 1101 S. 5th Avenue on the report of an assault.

Upon arrival officers discovered the victim had been assaulted by his adult son, identified as Scott Ray Swartz age 41 of Marshalltown. The victim was transported by ambulance to Central Iowa Healthcare for treatment of his injuries and later released. Swartz fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle before officers arrived.

During an interview with the victim police learned that the victim was missing his handgun and was possibly with Swartz.

On September 23, 2016 at about 11:24 am an officer in plain clothes spotted Swartz driving the victim’s vehicle by the victim’s residence. Swartz was followed until uniformed officers could arrive, but before uniformed officers could arrive on scene Swartz pulled into the parking lot near the Marshalltown High School Auditorium.

Not knowing Swartz’s intentions, a high risk vehicle stop was conducted and Swartz was taken into custody without incident. No weapon was located in the vehicle. No students or staff were in the area during the stop.
