Iowa State University President Steven Leath damaged a university-owned airplane he was piloting when it made a rough landing at an Illinois airport.
The university confirmed the incident Friday, 14 months after it happened, after inquiries by The Associated Press.
Reports obtained by AP show both wings on the plane suffered damage after Leath failed to navigate windy conditions and hit the runway at the Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington, Illinois.
Experts said the incident appears to be a case of an inexperienced pilot making an error. The school said Leath, a ceritifed pilot, can fly himself even though it employs three professional pilots.
The university confirmed it paid for $12,000 for repairs. Leath and his wife were returning from Ashe County, North Carolina, where they own a home.
