A small aircraft traveling from Illinois to Ankeny was forced to make an emergency landing in a field south of Newton on Tuesday.

At 11 a.m., the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office received word that a pilot and his passenger had made an emergency landing of their aircraft.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to an area south of Newton, at which time they discovered a small aircraft resting in a bean field.

The pilot, James Meyer of Illinois, and a passenger, both escaped injury, according to the sheriff’s office.

Meyer told investigators the plane ran out of gas, prompting the emergency landing.
