A long-time coaching legend at Colo-Nesco High School is stepping down after providing many years of dedicated service to the profession.

Wayne Cafferty has announced he is now retiring after 36 years of coaching.

After a seven-year stint at Harris-Lake Park to begin his coaching career, Cafferty was immediately able to turn the Colo-Nesco basketball program into a powerhouse among the smaller schools in central Iowa.

Cafferty has led the Colo-Nesco girls basketball program to 13 conference championships and six state tournament appearances during his tenure.

Cafferty, a 1981 graduate of Prairie of Gowrie and 1986 graduate of Wayne State College, took over the Colo-Nesco girls program 29 years ago when it was transitioning from six-on-six to five-on-five in girls basketball.

Cafferty says he will always cherish his time as a coach and will always be a part of Colo-Nesco  girls basketball.
