Women's History Month Means the Promotion of STEM Jobs for Women

by KIX101.1 /1230 KFJB News Department posted Mar 7 2014 11:40AM
March is Women’s History Month and Iowa Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds has a passion for two things, representing Iowa and the STEM initiative. Especially, when it comes to promoting young girls to look into fields where women are under represented.

“Well, don’t be afraid at all,” Lt. Gov. Reynolds says, “That’s one of our number one objectives with the STEM initiative.”

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. And it’s a program that Marshalltown schools have really taken a hold of. And as Lt. Gov. Reynolds points out, it’s also for so many others who are being neglected from receiving this kind of education.

“We really need to reach out to those who are underrepresented and under served, especially young women and girls.”

And during Women’s History Month, it’s all about appealing to young women and helping them understand the possibilities STEM jobs could have on their future employment.

“So, we’re trying to find different ways that we can engage them, engage their passion,” she says, “and really help them start to see the relevance of taking math and science, and the impact that has on their future.”

Lt. Gov. Reynolds says the next step is to get young women together with female leaders in different fields like manufacturing, engineering, science, and robotics.

“So, I want to get them in front of women who are really successful, so they can start to model themselves after that.”

Lt. Gov. Reynolds and Gov. Branstad will both be in Marshalltown to support the STEM initiative on Wednesday March 12th at Fisher Elementary.
