~CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) - The University of Northern Iowa has developed an app aimed at improving a speech disorder.
The "Name That!" app, created at the AppsLab in UNI's John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center, focuses on Aphasia, a language disorder that inhibits speech and language comprehension.
App co-creator Angela Burda, a professor in UNI's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, says it allows patients at-home use and mirrors treatments used by pathologists. There are plans for several app versions, including an expanded clinic-based one for use in hospitals and long-term care settings.
Students at the entrepreneurial center and computer science departments helped design and develop the app. Stephen Hughes, manager of the AppsLab, led the team along with Burda.
The app is available for Apple devices and Android devices in Google Play.
