The Panthers (31-3) built a 21-point lead after scoring 11 of the first 12 points to start the second half. That huge lead was whittled to seven points twice but the Cowboys could get no closer. Wes Washpun scored eight of his 10 points in the final 9 minutes to help the Panthers advance.

Larry Nance Junior led Wyoming (25-10) with 16 points, but was mostly invisible in the first half. Nance had one point and one shot in the first half before coming alive in the second half to try and lead Wyoming's comeback bid.

The San Francisco 49ers say linebacker Chris Borland is retiring.

Borland told ESPN's "Outside the Lines" earlier Monday that he is retiring following his standout rookie season because of concerns about head trauma.

The 24-year-old Borland had a team-leading 108 tackles in his stellar rookie season, emerging as a punishing defender. He also had a sack and two interceptions.

He told "Outside the Lines" on Monday he wants to do "what's best for my health."

This is yet another blow to the team that lost coach Jim Harbaugh after the season, then watched Frank Gore, Mike Iupati, Chris Culliver and Perrish Cox depart in free agency this past week.

Borland's big announcement comes less than a week after five-time All Pro linebacker Patrick Willis walked away from football.

The San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms of a three-year contract with free agent wide receiver Stevie Johnson, who's looking to bounce back after two down years.

Johnson became the first player in Buffalo Bills history to have three straight 1,000-yard seasons, from 2010-12. His best season was 2010, when he had 82 catches for 1,073 yards and 10 TDs.

His production fell off the last two seasons. In 2013, his last with Buffalo, he had 52 catches in 12 games, for 597 yards and three scores.

Last year with San Francisco, he caught 35 passes for 435 yards and three touchdowns.

After going from the third overall draft pick to dropped by two teams in three years, running back Trent Richardson knows he is running out of chances to make it in the NFL.

Richardson signed a two-year deal with the Oakland Raiders on Tuesday with hopes that a new team can resurrect what once was a promising career.

"That's a taste that you never want to get in your mouth again," said Richardson of being let go by a team. "Hopefully, this is my last stop, and I'm going to do whatever I can to make this my last stop. Until I'm ready to walk away from the game, I don't want to leave here."

Richardson entered the NFL as one of the most heralded running backs in years after a successful college career at Alabama. Richardson is one of three backs since 1996 to go in the top three picks in the draft, joining No. 2 overall picks Reggie Bush in 2006 and Ronnie Brown in 2005.

But after a somewhat promising rookie year in Cleveland when he rushed for 950 yards and 11 touchdowns and caught 51 passes and another score while playing much of the season with broken ribs, Richardson has been sent away by teams in his next two seasons.

Cleveland traded Richardson to Indianapolis after just two games in the 2013 season for a first-round pick. Thought to be the final piece needed to solidify an offense led by star quarterback Andrew Luck, Richardson never fit in with the Colts.

"The very first humbling experience I had was getting traded," he said. "I spent the whole year, just wondering, why in the world and how in the world did I get traded. Looking back at it, even if they said it was a business move, in my head, it's still some type of, 'OK, you still got traded.'"

He averaged just 2.9 yards per carry with Indianapolis in the final 14 games of the 2013 season and was not much better last season when he ran for 519 yards, averaging 3.3 yards per carry.

Richardson played just one snap in three playoff games last season and never touched the ball. He was inactive for a divisional game against Denver and was suspended for the AFC championship game against New England because he didn't contact the team when his girlfriend had pregnancy complications, and he missed mandatory functions.

That suspension voided his contract, the Colts argued. Richardson has filed a grievance to recover $3 million in salary.

"From the beginning, trying to fit into their program, it was different for me," he said. "For me, it was more of me being an all-time blocker. There's nothing wrong with blocking, but I still want to be able to help the team in different types of ways. I don't look at it as a bad thing. I just think it was a bad marriage."

The Raiders have been looking to upgrade a running game that was the least productive in the NFL last season. Richardson joins a backfield in Oakland that features Latavius Murray, who showed promise last season by rushing for 424 yards on 82 carries in limited action, and free-agent acquisition Roy Helu.

Neither of those players have been the featured back and Richardson believes he can earn the starting role in Oakland after going over the playbook with coach Jack Del Rio on Monday night. Richardson said the offense is similar to what he ran in college at Alabama.

"He just said there is just a lot of opportunity out here," Richardson said. "He said he isn't going to promise me anything, but if I come in and work, I can be that bell cow."

A standout for the Colts' divisional rivals, the Texans, who made two All-Pro teams and seven Pro Bowls, Johnson was released by Houston. He joined Indianapolis on Wednesday.

Johnson, 33, holds the NFL record with 21 career games with 10 or more receptions and 100 or more yards receiving. He has 10 games with at least 10 receptions and 150 yards receiving, tied with Jerry Rice for the most in NFL history.

The Colts released veteran wideout Reggie Wayne this offseason, and Johnson will move into his spot. He's never had a quarterback the caliber of Andrew Luck throwing to him.

Yet, since being selected as the third overall pick of the 2003 draft, Johnson has the most receptions and yards of any player during that span.

The Oakland Raiders have released Matt Schaub less than one year after acquiring him to be their starting quarterback.

Schaub was beaten out for the starting job by rookie Derek Carr last year and was released Monday just days after Oakland signed Christian Ponder as a backup.

Schaub threw just 10 passes in his one season with the Raiders with two interceptions. His biggest contribution came when he took over the holding duties from punter Marquette King.

The Raiders traded a sixth-round pick to Houston for Schaub last March and paid him $8 million for his season on the bench. The move to cut him saves Oakland $5.5 million on the salary cap.

Now he'll join a Houston unit led by Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt and that features last year's No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney, who was injured for most of 2014.

The 6-foot-2, 325-pound Wilfork started all 16 games for the Patriots last year and had 47 tackles and an interception. He was a locker room leader in New England, as well.

One of the most successful college quarterbacks at Florida and winner of the 2007 Heisman Trophy, Tebow started 14 games for Denver over two years after being selected in the first round of the 2010 draft. He won one playoff game with the Broncos, who released him when they signed Peyton Manning.

The career hits leader agreed to a lifetime ban in August 1989 following an investigation by Major League Baseball that concluded he bet on the Cincinnati Reds to win while managing the team. Manfred replaced Selig in January.

The Panthers announced they've released running back DeAngelo Williams, the franchise's all-time leading rusher.

Carolina tagged Williams Tuesday as a post-June 1 designation, which allows them to save money under this year's salary cap by pushing a portion of Williams' prorated signing bonus into 2016.

The announcement doesn't come as a surprise.

Williams, 31, told Charlotte television station WBTV on Feb. 23 that general manager Dave Gettleman and coach Ron Rivera informed him he'd be released.

Rivera says in a release Williams "will forever be remembered as one of the quintessential Panthers of this era."

Williams ran for 6,846 yards and 46 touchdowns in Carolina, but his production dropped off in recent years. Injuries kept him out of 10 games last season and he ran for just 219 yards.

A person familiar with the negotiations says the Jacksonville Jaguars have agreed to terms with former Denver tight end Julius Thomas and five other free agents.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the moves.

Jacksonville also struck deals Tuesday with former Miami defensive end Jared Odrick, former Dallas right tackle Jermey Parnell, former Green Bay cornerback Davon House, former San Francisco linebacker Dan Skuta and former Indianapolis free safety Sergio Brown.

It was one of the largest free-agent spending sprees in franchise history.

Jacksonville, which went 9-39 the last three years, had nearly $70 million in salary cap space and planned to spend much of it to land much-needed talent in free agency.

The Jaguars also re-signed exclusive rights free agent offensive lineman Austin Pasztor.

The Bengals solidified their linebacker position by reaching agreement on a deal with A.J. Hawk and tendering an offer to Emmanuel Lamur on Tuesday.

They also offered a one-year deal to defensive tackle Devon Still, whose daughter is fighting cancer. Still will have to decide whether to stay in Cincinnati while his 4-year-old daughter, Leah, is treated on the East Coast.

Hawk, who grew up in Ohio and attended Ohio State, worked out with the Bengals as free agency opened on Tuesday. Agent Mike McCartney tweeted that they had agreed to a two-year deal. The team didn't confirm it.

Lamur moved into a starter's role last season, when linebackers Vontaze Burfict and Rey Maualuga missed significant time with injuries.

Indianapolis has agreed to a contract with free agent running back Frank Gore.

Terms of the deal were not immediately available.

The news comes two days after it appeared Gore would sign with Philadelphia. The 31-year-old running back has eight 1,000-yard seasons and five Pro Bowl selections. He should help the Colts move on from the failed two-year experiment with Trent Richardson.

So far, Indy has focused primarily on fixing the offense in free agency. It had already announced deals with former Eagles offensive lineman Todd Herremans and backup quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. On Tuesday morning, the Colts announced they also were re-signing versatile backup offensive lineman Joe Reitz. Indy also has agreed to terms on a two-year deal with cornerback Darius Butler.

McCoy spoke during a news conference shortly after the Bills and Philadelphia Eagles formally announced the trade, which went into effect Tuesday. The teams agreed to the deal last week, with Buffalo acquiring McCoy in exchange for linebacker Kiko Alonso.

McCoy called it "the best move," and added he "can't wait to get to work."

The New York Jets have released wide receiver Percy Harvin, who became expendable when the team acquired Brandon Marshall from the Chicago Bears.

The Jets acquired the versatile Harvin from the Seattle Seahawks last October, but he was due $10.5 million in base salary this season. New York would have also owed Seattle a fourth-round draft pick if he was still a member of the Jets after 4 p.m. on March 19.

Instead, the Jets owe the Seahawks a sixth-rounder.

Harvin had 29 catches for 350 yards and a touchdown in eight games with the Jets after then-general manager John Idzik acquired him, calling the move "a potential coup" for New York. Harvin also ran for 110 yards on 22 carries, and averaged 24.8 yards on 20 kickoff returns.

Brandon Marshall has passed his physical and his trade to the New York Jets from the Chicago Bears is official.

The teams agreed on the deal last Friday, but it became official at the start of the unrestricted free agency signing period Tuesday.

The Jets sent a fifth-round draft pick to the Bears for Marshall and a seventh-rounder. Marshall, who turns 31 on March 23, has played the last three seasons with the Bears. He dealt with injuries and had 61 catches last season, his lowest total since his rookie year with Denver in 2006, for 721 yards and eight touchdowns.

Marshall told the team's website playing in New York and for new coach Todd Bowles is "an amazing opportunity."

Quarterback Jake Locker is retiring from football rather than hit free agency after four NFL seasons with the Tennessee Titans. He says in a statement that he no longer has the "burning desire" needed to keep playing the game for a living.

The 26-year-old Locker wrote Tuesday in a statement released through his agent, Camron Hahn, that he decided to retire after talking with his family.

He says trying to keep playing without that desire for the game "would be unfair to the next organization with whom I would eventually sign." Locker says he knows his decision is surprising to many but he knows it's right in his heart.

The Titans drafted Locker with the eighth pick overall in 2011, but he dealt with injuries and was benched in October.

Two people familiar with the trade say the Philadelphia Eagles and St. Louis Rams have agreed to swap quarterbacks Nick Foles and Sam Bradford.

Both people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the teams are still working on the draft picks involved in the deal. Bradford hasn't played since his 2013 season ended after he tore his left ACL. The former No. 1 overall pick tore it again in preseason last year.

Foles had a breakout season for the Eagles in 2013 and was offensive MVP of the Pro Bowl. He missed the last eight games in 2014 after breaking his collarbone.

Foles is the latest star player to depart Philadelphia. He joins two-time All-Pro running back LeSean McCoy and Pro Bowl wide receiver Jeremy Maclin.

A person familiar with the deal says the New York Jets have re-signed running back Bilal Powell to a one-year contract.

Powell, a fourth-round draft pick out of Louisville in 2011, ran for 141 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries as a backup to both Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Jets hadn't announced the deal.

Powell, known for his versatility and strong blocking in the passing game, saw his role in the running game diminished last season as then-offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg tried to spread carries between his three backs.

He has 1,296 career yards rushing and six TDs, along with 65 catches for 511 yards in his four seasons with the Jets.

The Denver Broncos moved on from Pro Bowl tight end Julius Thomas by signing Virgil Green and Owen Daniels to three-year deals Tuesday.

Thomas is the only tight end in NFL history to catch a dozen touchdown passes in consecutive seasons and Green has just one TD catch in his four-year career.

Yet, in new coach Gary Kubiak's system, tight ends have to be good blockers in the run game, and that's Green's forte and Thomas' shortfall.

Daniels, a two-time Pro Bowler, has played all nine of his seasons for Kubiak, first in Houston and then in Baltimore last season, when he caught 48 passes for 527 yards and four touchdowns.

The Baltimore Ravens have traded nine-year defensive tackle Haloti Ngata to the Detroit Lions.

The move, designed to create salary cap space, was announced by the team Tuesday. Details of the deal were not immediately available.

Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome was attempting to renegotiate Ngata's contract, but the two sides apparently did not reach an accord.

Ngata is due $8.5 million next season and has a $16 million salary cap figure.

The 31-year-old Ngata is a five-time Pro Bowler. He started in 12 games last season before serving a four-game suspension for using Adderall.

Ngata will fill the void for the Lions left by the departure of defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, who is expected to sign with the Miami Dolphins.

The Ravens are also expected to lose standout wide receiver Torrey Smith, linebacker Pernell McPhee and tight end Owen Daniels to free agency.

The Browns have officially signed wide receiver Brian Hartline, a rangy target who can help offset the indefinite loss of Josh Gordon.

Hartline agreed to terms on a two-year, $6 million contract Monday. The Ohio native finalized the deal Tuesday hours before NFL free agency opened.

The 28-year-old Hartline had consecutive 1,000-yard seasons in 2012 and 2013 for Miami. He dropped to 474 yards last season, but the Browns needed quality depth after Gordon, who led the league in yards receiving in 2013, was suspended one year for multiple violations of the substance abuse policy.

Hartline was released by the Dolphins last month.

The Browns have kept their plans in free agency closely guarded. Coach Mike Pettine said the team will adhere to a "right player, right price" policy in negotiations. Pettine said the Browns would like to re-sign cornerback Buster Skrine.

The 49ers say Seven-time Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis will retire after his 2014 season was cut short by a toe injury that required surgery.

Willis and friend NaVorro Bowman had made up one of the best 1-2 linebacker punches in the NFL until both missed time last year, the entire season for Bowman as he recovered from reconstructive knee surgery.

The 30-year-old Willis was sidelined with a strained muscle in his left big toe. He was placed on the season-ending injured reserve Nov. 11 after getting hurt in the third quarter at St. Louis on Oct. 13.

The Green Bay Packers officially re-signed receiver Randall Cobb.

The team did not release terms of the deal in a statement Monday. Cobb and the Packers agreed to a four-year, $40 million contract over the weekend that kept the wideout off the open market.

He combined with Jordy Nelson to form one of the top receiving duos in the NFL during quarterback Aaron Rodgers' MVP campaign. Cobb finished with career highs of 91 catches for 1,287 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The Packers have also re-signed quarterback Scott Tolzien, who appears to be in line to back up Rodgers in 2015. Tolzien started two games in 2013 while Rodgers was recovering from a collarbone injury.

Andre Johnson has been released by the Houston Texans, a person with knowledge of the move says.

The person spoke Monday on condition of anonymity because no formal announcement had been made by the team.

Johnson, the longest-tenured Texan, just completed his 12th season. He was a first-round draft pick in 2003, joining the expansion team in its second season.

The 33-year-old Johnson had 85 catches for 936 yards last season, but the Texans were beginning to see DeAndre Hopkins as their top receiving threat.

Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith has said goodbye to Baltimore, where he starred for four seasons after being drafted out of Maryland.

The Ravens have very little room under the salary cap and evidently won't be spending the money it will take to keep Smith in Baltimore when free agency begins on Tuesday.

In a blog, Smith wrote Sunday, "I will be playing for a different organization" and "It is tough to leave a city that I now call home."

Smith is the Ravens career leader in yards per catch with a 16.9 average. He ranks second in team history with 30 touchdown catches.

Alex Rodriguez returned to the New York Yankees after an absence of more than 17 months, lining a single into short left field in his first at-bat and going 1 for 2 with a walk in a 3-1 spring-training loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.

Greeted by a 10-second mix of boos and cheers from the crowd of 9,673 as he stepped into the batter's box for his first game following a one-year drug suspension, Rodriguez was wearing the Yankees' white uniform with pinstripes for the team's exhibition season home opener rather than the usual dark blue jersey used in exhibition games.

Rodriguez swung at the first four of 10 pitches he saw in three plate appearances. Batting second as New York's designated hitter, he swung past a pair of 91 mph pitches from Philadelphia's Kevin Slowey in the first inning.

He lined a soft single to left on an 89 mph 0-2 offering that was over the plate.

The Detroit Tigers have released Joel Hanrahan from a minor league contract and said the right-hander will have his second Tommy John surgery on March 18.

Hanrahan had his right elbow ligament replaced in May 2013 while with Boston, when he also had his right flexor tendon repaired. Detroit signed him to a $1 million, one-year contract last May, but he never appeared in a game. The Tigers agreed in November to a minor league contract for $18,000 a month with a provision for a $1 million deal if added to the 40-man roster.

Hanrahan's fastball averaged 97-98 mph before he got hurt. Manager Brad Ausmus said before Wednesday's game with the Baltimore Orioles that Hanrahan could have helped the Tigers if he had been healthy.

"He's going to get the surgery, rehab and reconsider what's next on his agenda — whether he's going to try and play again or not," Ausmus said.

Hanrahan is 22-18 with a 3.85 ERA and 100 saves in seven seasons with Washington, Pittsburgh and Boston.

The Minnesota Vikings have agreed with the Buffalo Bills to trade quarterback Matt Cassel next week for an undisclosed draft pick.

The Vikings announced the deal on Wednesday, six days before NFL transactions can begin with the start of the new league year. The trade can't be completed until then, but the announcement wouldn't have been made if there were potential roadblocks for the deal.

The trade also wouldn't have been initiated had the Vikings not been confident in Teddy Bridgewater, the first-round draft pick who took over as the starter in the third game of last season after Cassel broke his left foot. Cassel spent two years with the Vikings, taking over in 2013 after Christian Ponder struggled to keep the job.

The new flat-seam ball in college baseball is having the desired effect, with teams hitting 40 percent more home runs so far this season.

The NCAA announced Wednesday that teams are hitting a home run about every other game. Last year, teams homered about once every three games through the first three weeks of the season.

The actual average is 0.47 home runs per team compared with 0.33 at this point in 2014. Last season's final average of 0.39 per team was a record low.

The NCAA approved use of the flat-seam ball in an attempt to punch up a game that has seen steep declines in offense since new bat standards took effect in 2011. Studies show the flat-seam ball travels 20 feet farther than the old raised-seam ball.

ESPN is getting back into broadcasting professional hockey after landing the U.S. rights for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

The NHL and NHL Players' Association, who are overseeing the eight-team international tournament, jointly announced the decision Wednesday. ESPN was selected ahead of NBC Sports Group, which is in the midst of a 10-year contract to broadcast NHL regular-season and playoff games through 2020-21.

ESPN was the NHL's U.S. broadcaster from 1992 through the league's lockout that wiped out the entire 2004-05 season.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said ESPN was selected after NBC executives said they could encounter scheduling conflicts to broadcast the tournament which will be held in Toronto, and run from Sept. 17 to Oct. 1.

Rogers Sportsnet and French-language TVA Sports were awarded the Canadian broadcasting rights.

The type of asset swap New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson is attempting to try to regain complete control of his business interests from recently estranged heirs is being challenged in a new lawsuit in Texas.

The lawsuit has been brought by former San Antonio mayor Phil Hardberger and estate layer Art Bayern, whom a Texas judge recently appointed as co-receivers of one of the trusts Benson set up for his daughter Renee.

They argue Tom Benson should not be able to swap promissory notes for shares of businesses that he'd previously placed in trust for his heirs.

Such swaps were initiated in January, after Benson disowned his daughter and her two children, who are now suing him in both Texas and Louisiana.
