Teacher sex abuse case goes before Supreme Court

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The attorney for a woman who says her high school coach molested her causing her emotion problems wants the Iowa Supreme Court to change the way lawsuits against schools are handled in such cases.

Des Moines attorney Roxanne Conlin is representing a woman who says her New London school teacher and coach sexually abused her for several years. She's suing the school district.

The district's attorney, Steven Ort, says current law prohibits the lawsuit because the statute of limitations has expired.

At the center of the argument is whether school districts fall under a discovery rule that gives victims up to four years to file suit after they discover the abuse affected them.

Ort claims past court rulings concluded the discovery rule doesn't apply to schools. Conlin argues it does.
