Iowa State's beloved "Mayor" is gone, lured to the riches and challenges of the NBA.

At least Fred Hoiberg left his alma mater stocked with talent.

The 42-year-old Hoiberg grew up in Ames, served as a ball boy for the Cyclones and later starred for legendary coach Johnny Orr. As a coach, he brought back the "Hilton Magic" to a success-starved fan base.

Rare was the day when Hoiberg could walk down the street without being stopped for autographs and his record stood for itself: Four NCAA tournament appearances in five seasons and back-to-back Big 12 tourney titles.

But now the day Iowa State fans have been dreading has come. Hoiberg is off to coach the Chicago Bulls.

A report on a May survey says slower economic growth likely is ahead for nine Midwestern and Plains states.

The survey report issued Monday says the overall Mid-America Business Conditions Index dropped to 50.4 last month from 52.7 April.

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the survey, and he highlighted drops in economic activity for companies linked to energy production and agriculture.

The survey results from supply managers are compiled into a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests economic growth, while a score below that suggests decline.

The three rural Iowa counties targeted in a federal lawsuit by a Des Moines water utility have filed a response denying that they contribute to high nitrate levels in rivers. The Des Moines Register reports that Buena Vista, Calhoun and Sac counties submitted the response on May 22nd. The lawsuit filed earlier this year says the three counties should be required to obtain federal water pollution discharge permits because they release nitrate pollutants into rivers much like regulated factories.
