Rep. Braley hosts 'Budget Deficit' Workshop in Marshalltown

When the government shut down in November, the country was consumed with talk of the National Deficit and Debt. Many regular citizens talked about how they knew how to solve the problem. And with the help of the Concord Coalition, Representative Bruce Braley ( IA-1 ) hosted a "Deficit Reduction Workshop" at Marshalltown Community College.

The event, which allows participants the chance to look at solving the country's economic problem, is a great chance for people outside Washington to participate in what has become a popular topic.

Rep. Braley says it's quite the learning experience, too.

"These workshops are fantastic because they give constituents the opportunity to struggle with the exact same issues that we face in congress," he says.

And the learning is not just for participants.

"It provides us with direct feedback and what their priorities are."

Rep. Braley pointed out that he often takes back what information he gains from these workshops and takes them back to Washington to share with his colleagues.

"I've been doing these for three years now," Rep. Braley says," and I've always found the feedback I get at these workshops incredibly valuable."

He also adds, "I take these back to share with my colleagues, as we struggle to find ways to reduce the deficit and make strong fiscal policies moving forward."

Rep. Braley was not the only law maker in attendance at the Deficit Workshop, Marshalltown Representative, and House Minority Leader, Mark Smith also added to the idea that these types of activities are a great experience for those who want to understand how the budget process works. Not to mention they are able to work through these problems with policy makers like Rep. Braley.

"This is a rare opportunity," Rep. Smith says," where we do have a sitting member of Congress spending this time with the people of Marshalltown and Marshall County, spending the time to get their input."

Rep. Braley did say, as an example, in previous years he has taken data from these work shops as he pushed for changes in Tax Policy, after learning the concerns of his constituents.
