~DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Acclaimed opera singer Simon Estes joined forces with fine arts lobbyists to advocate for arts education.
Estes, along with members of the Iowa Alliance for Arts Education, urged lawmakers to add fine arts to the Iowa Core Curriculum in a presentation Wednesday before the Senate Education Committee.
Estes says the arts are vital in schools, and students need instruction in topics ranging from painting and sculpting to singing and playing an instrument.
Democratic Sen. Herman Quirmbach, who heads the committee, says he is a strong supporter of the arts and believes they belong with math, science and other subjects already included in the curriculum.
Estes spent the day at the Capitol. He sang for both the House and Senate and met with legislative leaders before testifying at the committee hearing.
