SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Zach Johnson, Rory Sabbatini and Brian Harman

shot 8-under-par 63s Thursday to share the lead after the first

round of the John Deere Classic.

Johnson and Sabbatini played bogey-free golf, while Harman had nine

birdies and one bogey on the par-71 TPC Deere Run.

They led 2004 British Open champion Todd Hamilton, Australian Steven Bowditch and

William McGirt, the best afternoon finisher, by a stroke.

Johnson, who won the Deere in 2012 and lost it to Jordan Spieth in a

playoff last year, birdied four of his first five holes and was 6

under on his opening nine.

Harman, who bettered his best round of the year by two strokes, was 2

under through six holes when his caddie, Scott Tway, took ill. Jay

Hatch of Davenport, Iowa, a high school basketball coach, volunteered

from the gallery, and carried Harman's bag the last 12 holes, which

Harman played in 6 under.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Jack Hawksworth hit the wall at Pocono so hard that he hurt his heart.

Hawksworth hopes the wreck won't halt the momentum of his promising rookie season in IndyCar.

Hawksworth arrived for pre-race preparations at Iowa Speedway on Thursday, just four days after being released from the hospital. Hawksworth missed last weekend's race at Pocono Raceway after a nasty crash during a practice run.

The 23-year-old native of England was diagnosed with a myocardial contusion — more commonly known as a bruised heart — but he's since been cleared to run on Saturday.

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Chicago Cubs are giving one of their prospects a chance to spend a couple of days in the majors, promoting second baseman Arismendy Alcantara while infielder Darwin Barney is on paternity leave.

Alcantara, 22, was in the starting lineup batting second against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. He batted .307 with 25 doubles, 11 triples, 10 homers and 41 RBIs for Triple-A Iowa.

When Barney returns, Alcantara will go back to the minors. Barney is batting .224 with 10 doubles, one triple, two homers and 16 RBIs in 70 games.

As planned, the Cubs called up right-hander Dallas Beeler to make his second major league start in Cincinnati. They optioned left-hander Chris Rusin to Iowa.

Left-hander Tsuyoshi Wada also was returned to Iowa, a day after his debut.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) — A blogger hired by the Washington Redskins to defend the team's name has quit after two weeks.

Ben Tribbett announced his resignation on Twitter late Monday, saying he didn't want to be a distraction because of personal attacks directed toward him.

Tribbett is well-known in Virginia politics as an advocate for liberal issues. He is perhaps best known for leading the attacks on Sen. George Allen for using the word "macaca" to describe an American of Indian descent during Allen's ill-fated re-election campaign in 2006.

Tribbett tweeted that he supports the Redskins name but doesn't "see eye to eye with some friends" over the issue.

Redskins owner Dan Snyder has vowed not to change the name but is facing unprecedented opposition from those who consider it a racial slur.

LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — Jack Hawksworth missed the IndyCar race Sunday at Pocono because of a heart contusion.

Hawksworth was injured Saturday in an accident during the second practice session.

He was evaluated and released from the infield care center. Hawksworth stayed overnight for observation at a hospital and was released Sunday.

Hawksworth will be re-evaluated by the IndyCar medical team Tuesday before being cleared to drive next week at Iowa Speedway.

The 23-year driver from Bradford, England, was coming off a season-best third-place finish at Houston. After his accident in practice, he did not make a qualifying attempt.

"Just a little bit sore. I think I'll be cleared to drive, so that's not a problem," he said.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The International Olympic Committee has retained three bid cities in the race for the 2022 Winter Olympics — Beijing, Oslo and Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The three were the only remaining contenders after a series of withdrawals by other candidates.

The IOC executive board decided Monday to approve all three as finalists rather than cut the field any further.

The cities must submit their detailed bid files to the IOC by next January. The host city will be selected in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on July 31, 2015.

The bid race began with six cities, but has been cut in half by the withdrawals of Stockholm; Krakow, Poland; and Lviv, Ukraine.

The future of Oslo's bid remains uncertain. The Norwegian government will decide in the autumn whether to back the project.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Wild have agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way contract with right wing Joel Rechlicz.

The deal was announced Wednesday. The 27-year-old has played in 26 NHL games, but none since 2012. Rechlicz played last season in the AHL.

Rechlicz is the third player the Wild have done a two-way deal with since free agency began Tuesday. They also agreed on two-way contracts with defenseman Stu Bickel and center Brett Sutter, other players likely to bounce between the Wild and AHL affiliate Iowa this season. The Wild also signed defenseman Guillaume Gelinas Tuesday to an entry-level deal out of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

However, the big move by the Wild was signing left wing Thomas Vanek on Tuesday to a three-year contract.

GREENWICH, Conn. (AP) — A mitt signed by legendary New York Yankees slugger Lou Gehrig is going up for auction.

Howard Henderson was a boy some 80 years ago when the first baseman befriended him during front-yard games of catch. The glove Gehrig gave his fellow lefty will be auctioned off July 15.

Hunt Auctions says it can't prove Gehrig used the glove in a game, though Henderson said Gehrig told him he had.

The glove is autographed "To Howard. I hope you have much luck with this glove as I did. Lou Gehrig." It is expected to fetch between $200,000 and $300,000.

Gehrig was friends with Henderson's father, songwriter Ray Henderson. Howard Henderson turns 92 on Friday, the 75th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's famous July 4 farewell speech at Yankee Stadium.

Mookie Betts hit his first major league homer for the Red Sox, who lost for the ninth time in 13 games.

Red Sox DH David Ortiz became the 36th player in major league history to collect 1,000 extra-base hits with a ground-rule double.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Virginia coach Brian O'Connor is the hometown favorite when his Cavaliers meet Vanderbilt in the College World Series finals starting Monday night.

O'Connor was born in Omaha, grew up in neighboring Council Bluffs, Iowa, and pitched in the CWS in 1991 for Omaha's Creighton University.

O'Connor said he would prefer to downplay his background, but knows that is unlikely. He said he wants to keep the focus on the players and their experience.

Virginia (52-14) and Vanderbilt (49-20) both are in the finals for the first time. The Cavaliers went 3-0 in bracket play. The Commodores went 3-1 in their bracket. They've never played each other in baseball.

Castillo missed 18 games with inflammation in his left rib cage. He had a two-game rehab stint with Triple-A Iowa.

On the season, Castillo is hitting .242 with five home runs and 21 RBIs for the Cubs.

Cubs manager Rick Renteria did not have Castillo in the starting lineup on Sunday against the Pirates.

To make room for Castillo, the Cubs designated catcher Eli Whiteside for assignment. In eight games, Whiteside was 3 for 25 with two RBIs.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa's dependence on tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz in key moments last season might have left the impression that the Hawkeyes were thin at that spot.

Iowa hopes a deep group of tight ends that played behind Fiedorowicz in 2013 can play bigger roles this fall.

Last season, Fiedorowicz was Iowa's second-leading receiver with 30 receptions for 299 yards and six touchdowns. He was taken in the NFL Draft in May by the Houston Texans, leaving Ray Hamilton, Jake Duzey, George Kittle and Henry Krieger-Coble behind.

Hamilton said Wednesday that Fiedorowicz's departure has helped foster strong competition for playing time next season.
