DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A panel of state officials will wait until Friday to decide whether former state lawmaker Tony Bisignano may run for the Iowa Senate.

Bisignano, who served 10 years in the Legislature until 1997, is seeking the Democratic nomination for the Des Moines area seat Jack Hatch is leaving.

Primary opponent Ned Chiodo, challenges Bisignano's right to hold office because of a second-offense drunken driving conviction in January.

Chiodo claims that falls under the constitutional definition of an infamous crime, which means Bisignano cannot vote or hold public office.

Bisignano says drunken driving is not an infamous crime and if it is tens of thousands of Iowans would be ineligible to vote.

Attorney General Tom Miller, Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz, and State Auditor Mary Mosiman are considering the challenge.
