A person close to the situation tells The Associated Press that South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier has told his players that he is retiring, effective immediately. The person says the school has not named an interim coach but likely would announce someone to finish out the season by Wednesday. The Gamecocks are 2-4 overall and 0-4 in the SEC for the first time in Spurrier's 23 seasons coaching in the league at Florida and South Carolina.

Michael Vick couldn't engineer a touchdown drive for 3 ½ quarters on Monday before he rallied the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 24-20 thriller over the Chargers in San Diego.

Le'Veon Bell scored on a 1-yard wildcat run as time expired to give the Steelers a 3-2 record. He took the direct snap, ran left and was buried in traffic before diving for the end zone.

Vick kept the drive alive with a 24-yard scramble up the middle and then a 16-yard pass to Heath Miller one play before Bell's big run. Vick also fired a 72-yard touchdown pass to Markus Wheaton with 7:42 remaining to tie the game at 17.

Pittsburgh's other TD came on Antwon Blake's 70-yard interception late in the third quarter.

Philip Rivers was 35 of 48 for 365 yards and two touchdowns for the 2-3 Chargers.

Clayton Kershaw was pretty good in Game 1 of the Dodgers' NL division series against the Mets last night, but Jacob deGrom was better.

DeGrom tied a Mets postseason record with 13 strikeouts while scattering five hits in seven scoreless innings to lead a 3-1 triumph over Los Angeles. He matched the team mark set by Tom Seaver in Game 1 of the 1973 NLCS.

Daniel Murphy put the Mets in front with a solo homer in the fourth off Kershaw, who allowed just three other hits while fanning 11 over 6 2/3 innings. Kershaw stayed out of trouble until the seventh, when he walked the bases loaded to end his night. Pedro Baez came on and promptly gave up David Wright's two-run single.

The Dodgers didn't score until Adrian Gonzalez laced an RBI single off Tyler Clippard. Jeurys Familia replaced Clippard after the RBI hit and retired the next four batters to pick up the save.

Game 2 is today in Los Angeles with Zack Greinke (GREHN'-kee) throwing for the Dodgers against rookie Noah Syndergaard.

The St. Louis Cardinals cooled off the Chicago Cubs by taking Game 1 of the National League Division Series.

Chicago had won nine straight dating to the regular season before John Lackey silenced them in the Redbirds' 4-0 shutout of the Cubs. Lackey was working on a no-hitter until Addison Russell led off the sixth with a single. Lackey gave up just one other hit over 7 1/3 innings before the Cards' bullpen completed the team's first postseason shutout since Oct. 18, 2013.

Matt Holliday put the Cardinals ahead with an RBI single in the first inning before a pair of rookies contributed in a three-run eighth. Tommy Pham hit a solo homer to make it 2-0, two batters before Stephen Piscotty launched a two-run blast.

Losing pitcher Jon Lester gave up three runs and five hits while striking out nine in 7 1/3 innings.

Kyle Schwarber had two of the Cubs' three hits.

Game 2 is Saturday in St. Louis. Jaime Garcia will take the mound for the Cardinals against Kyle Hendricks.

Kansas City became the first home team to win a game in this postseason. The visitors had been 5-0 until the Royals rallied for a 5-4 win over the Astros in Kansas City, tying the AL division series at a game apiece. The Royals scored twice in the sixth before Ben Zobrist delivered a tiebreaking, RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.

Colby Rasmus and George Springer staked the Astros to a 4-1 lead by the third inning. Rasmus put Houston ahead with an RBI double that scored Springer giving the Astros a three-run cushion in the top of the third. Springer had provided a two-run single in the second.

Salvador Perez smacked a solo shot for the Royals before they got another run back on a double-play grounder in the third. Eric Hosmer highlighted the Royals' game-tying rally in the sixth, lining an RBI single and scoring the tying run when Perez worked out a bases-loaded walk.

Neither starting pitcher was very sharp. Kansas City starter Johnny Cueto was reached for four runs and seven hits in seven innings, with Houston's Scott Kazmir gave up three runs and five hits over 5 1/3.

Kelvin Herrera picked up the victory with help from Wade Davis, who earned the save. Davis allowed a one-out walk to Preston Tucker before picking off pinch-runner Carlos Gomez for the second out.

Will Harris was the loser.

The series shifts to Houston for Game 3 on Sunday. Edinson Volquez goes for the Royals against Dallas Keuchel, who won a league-high 20 games during the regular season before beating the Yankees in the wild card game.

Before the Royals' victory, the Rangers made it five straight playoff wins for the road team by winning a 14-inning marathon in Toronto, 6-4 over the Blue Jays. Hanser Alberto and Delino DeShields delivered RBI singles with two out in the top of the 14th. Rougned Odor scored the tiebreaking run after he over-ran second base and was almost tagged out.

Texas blew a 3-1 lead and trailed 4-3 with two out in the eighth before pinch-hitter Mike Napoli laced an RBI single to force extra innings.

Alberto finished with two RBIs and DeShields was 3-for-7 with two runs scored to help the Rangers get within one victory of the championship series.

John Donaldson homered for the Blue Jays, who will try to avoid a sweep when they take on the Rangers Sunday in Texas.

Colby Lewis is slated to start for the Rangers in Game 3 against Marco Estrada.

Blue Jays reliever Brett Cecil tore his left calf muscle during the game and might be done for the postseason. The Jays' top lefty in the pen was injured while tagging Napoli in a rundown that ended the eighth inning.

Both teams are 3-2 overall.

Jake Arrieta, Dexter Fowler and Kyle Schwarber carried the Cubs to a 4-0 shutout over Pittsburgh in the National League wild card game on Wednesday, setting up a division series against the Cardinals. Chicago had dropped nine straight playoff games since Game 4 of the 2003 NLCS.

Arrieta continued his string of outrageously good starts by tossing a four-hitter that included 11 strikeouts. It was the second complete game by a Cubs pitcher in a postseason game since the 1945 World Series, and the first since Mark Prior did it against Atlanta in the 2003 division series. Claude Passeau (pas-OH') was the last Cub to toss a postseason shutout, doing it in Game 3 of the '45 Fall Classic.

Arrieta ended the regular season winning his last 11 decisions and compiled a 0.41 ERA over the final two months.

Fowler led off the game with a single and stole second before scoring on Schwarber's single. Schwarber added a two-run blast that scored Fowler in the third inning, and Fowler launched a solo shot that put the Cubs ahead 4-0 in the fifth. Each run came against Pirates ace Garret Cole, who surrendered six hits in five innings.

Tempers flared in the seventh after Pirates reliever Tony Watson drilled Arrieta in the left side with a fastball. Arrieta and Watson exchanged words near home plate, causing the bullpens and benches to mill about the infield for a few moments. The only punches thrown were by Pirates first baseman Sean Rodriguez, who clobbered a drink cooler in the dugout.

Arrieta hit two Pirates earlier in the game, though neither appeared intentional.

Game 1 of the division series is Friday at Busch Stadium.

It will be the Houston Astros against the Kansas City Royals in the American League Division Series.

The Astros have advanced by knocking off the New York Yankees 3-0 in the wild card game in the Bronx. Dallas Keuchel (KY'-kuhl) worked six shutout innings and the Astros hit a pair of solo homers in their first postseason victory since Game 7 of the National League Championship Series.

Keuchel was in command most of the night despite pitching on three days' rest. The 20-game winner gave up just three singles and a walk while fanning seven. He got into trouble just once, when he put runners on first and second with two out in the sixth before getting Alex Rodriguez to hit a soft fly ball to center field.

Keuchel never gave up a run in 22 innings against the Bombers this season. He allowed just nine hits and a walk in 16 innings during his two starts versus the Yanks in the regular season.

Colby Rasmus put the Astros ahead to stay with a second-inning homer before Carlos Gomez went deep off starter Masahiro Tanaka (mah-sah-HEE'-roh tah-NAH'-kah) in the fourth. Tanaka allowed two other hits in his five innings of work, but the Yankees couldn't touch Houston's bullpen.

The Baltimore Ravens, down by 13 points in the second half and facing the prospect of an 0-4 start, rallied with a 23-20 overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Justin Tucker, who forced overtime with a 42-yard field goal with 3 seconds left in regulation, won it with a 52-yarder with 5:08 left in OT.

That came after Pittsburgh's Josh Scobee (SKOH'-bee) missed a pair of kicks in regulation that would have given the Steelers some cushion. In overtime, the Steelers failed to convert a pair of fourth downs in Baltimore territory rather than risk Scobee trying another field goal.

Justin Forsett (fohr-SEHT') ran for 150 yards for the Ravens. Joe Flacco completed 20 of 33 for 189 yards and threw a touchdown pass and did just enough late to help the Ravens end the worst start in franchise history.

Michael Vick threw for 124 yards and a score while starting in place of injured Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH'-lihs-bur-gur), but the 2-2 Steelers (2-2) bumbled late and Baltimore took advantage to get in the win column.

In their last 31 regular season meetings, the Ravens lead the Steelers 16-15 with 21 of those games decided by seven points or less. Five of those games have gone into overtime.
