AMES, Iowa (AP) — The slides at the Furman Aquatic Center in Ames have been repaired so they can be reopened to public use.
Officials say the welding work was completed Wednesday on the structural supports for the drop slide and tube slides. Center officials said Tuesday that they had recently discovered cracks in the supports.
A slide manufacturer engineer and local experts noted during a subsequent inspection that the supports didn't have proper drainage holes. That likely allowed water to build up and then freeze during colder months, stressing the metal supports.
