DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Barnstormers have relegated themselves.

The Barnstormers announced Wednesday that they'll be moving from the Arena Football League to the lower-tier Indoor Football League for the 2015 season.

President Jeff Lamberti says the "economic aspects" of the IFL are more fitting for the team in Des Moines, which was among the smallest markets in the AFL. The IFL is largely based in the Midwest and includes teams in nearby Cedar Rapids and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The Barnstormers competed in the AFL from 1995-2000 before returning to Iowa in 2008 as an af2 franchise.

Iowa rejoined the AFL in 2010 but failed to post a winning record.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa's biggest concern could be at kicker. And punter.

Iowa opens on Saturday against Northern Iowa with a remarkably settled depth chart. Aside from the kicking game and a bit of jostling at linebacker, the Hawkeyes already know exactly who they'll be counting on in 2014.

Marshall Koehn (kane) will open the season as Iowa's kicker, and junior college transfer Dillon Kidd will start at punter.

As long as Iowa stays healthy, it appears to have enough depth and experience to contend for the Big Ten West title.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — University of Iowa President Sally Mason says she stands by the controversial firing of women's field hockey coach Tracey Griesbaum.

Mason told reporters Tuesday that she understands that Griesbaum was a successful coach with many supporters, but that she "also understand the reasons" why athletic director Gary Barta removed her.

Barta said this month that he fired the 14-year coach after an investigation identified concerns and issues in the program. One professor says Griesbaum created a culture of intimidation.

Giresbaum has said that a few former players have falsely accused her of mistreating them.

Current team members issued a statement last week expressing support for Griesbaum, and many former players, parents and even rival programs have called for her reinstatement.

Griesbaum's longtime assistant, Lisa Cellucci, has been named interim coach.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — The key to the upcoming season is clear for Iowa State.

The Cyclones defense will need to play much better than it did a year ago for the program to have any hope of escaping the Big 12 basement.

For all the talk about new coordinator Mark Mangino's revamped offense, it's Iowa State's defense that should be under the heaviest scrutiny. The Cyclones allowed 36 points a game last season — ranking 109th out of 125 Bowl Subdivision teams — and surrendered at least 41 points five times in nine league games.

Iowa State knows that can't happen again this season, which starts on Saturday at home against FCS power North Dakota State.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The nation's winningest prep baseball coach is calling it a career.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association says coach Gene Schultz has resigned after 45 years and 1,754 wins at Kee High School in Lansing, Iowa.

Schultz took over at Kee in 1969 and led them to nine state titles, tied for the most in school history. Schultz helped put the Hawks in the state championship game 16 times, and his 32 state tournament wins is also an Iowa record.

Schultz also coached boys basketball at Kee, racking up 398 wins.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — A youth baseball coach from Rhode Island who has become an Internet sensation for the inspiring speech he made after his team was eliminated from the Little League World Series says the talk was spontaneous and from the heart.

Players on David Belisle's team from Cumberland were crying after Monday night's 8-7 loss to Chicago in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, when he kneeled down and told them they should be proud.

Belisle told the players they were one of the best teams in the world and they had their hometown and the state of Rhode Island jumping with excitement. One YouTube video of the speech had more than 350,000 views early Wednesday.

Belisle told NBC's "Today" show Wednesday that he wanted the boys to walk off that field as proud as could be.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Browns coach Mike Pettine has picked Brian Hoyer as starter over hotshot rookie Johnny Manziel.

Pettine met with his coaching staff Tuesday night and announced in a release Wednesday before practice that he'll go with Hoyer in the Sept. 7 opener against Pittsburgh. The decision ends weeks of competition and analysis.

Pettine delayed his decision after both Hoyer and Manziel played poorly in an exhibition loss at Washington on Monday. During that game, Manziel gave the finger to the Redskins sideline, an act Pettine said was factored into the decision.

Hoyer didn't win the job over Manziel as much as he hung onto it after beginning training camp as the No. 1 quarterback. Hoyer made three starts before a season-ending knee injury in 2013.
