A mechanical problem forced a charter plane carrying the Evansville University men's basketball team to turn around and land in Waterloo.

The team spent Wednesday night at a hotel after an uneventful landing at Waterloo airport. The team was headed home to Indiana after losing to Northern Iowa 68-57 in nearby Cedar Falls. On board were three crew members and 22 passengers.

The turboprop was chartered from Corporate Flight Management, of Smyrna, Tennessee. Spokesman Matt Chaifetz told said on Thursday that the plane had gotten blowing snow inside the mechanism that spins the blades. The pilots noticed a vibration they couldn't identify after takeoff, so they returned to Waterloo.

Chaifetz says the plane will be back in the air later Thursday.

Manny Ramirez and Kevin Youkilis have been hired by Chicago Cubs' executive Theo Epstein, their old boss on the Boston Red Sox.

After serving as a player-coach for Triple-A Iowa during the second half of last season, Ramirez was announced Tuesday as the Cubs' hitting consultant.

"Manny got rave reviews from everybody he worked with, from the young hitters he helped influence to the coaches he spent a lot of time around," said Epstein, the Cubs' president of baseball operations. "He did a great job of fitting in and sharing his wisdom and experience while being a good influence."

Suspended by Major League Baseball in 2009 and 2011 for performance-enhancing drugs, Ramirez made a positive impression with Epstein last summer.

"He was very open with the guys about what not to do in his past and lessons he learned along the way," Epstein said. "He was a huge asset, and we were really hopeful about the possibility of bringing him back."

Ramirez will work with hitters on the Cubs and at Triple-A.

"From the end of last season through the winter and all this month he has expressed an interest in working with our young players," Epstein said. "It is a pretty substantial role. He is going to spend plenty of time in spring training and in Chicago and Des Moines."

Youkilis was given a part-time job as a scouting and player development consultant.

"Youk is just starting out," Epstein said. "He just retired, and he is going to work part-time and see what he is good at. He is someone who definitely wants to work in baseball long-term."

Epstein said he is open to Sammy Sosa returning to the Cubs. Chicago also made four hirings for a new mental skills program, including Dr. Ken Ravizza, who has worked with new manager Joe Maddon when he was with the Angels and Rays.

"I don't think it is that bold of move," Epstein said. "It's just keeping up with the Joneses and trying to get an edge. Twenty-four years ago, or whenever I started, it was a real stigma if you approached a player about working with someone about the mental game. Players are more proactive and acknowledging that's an area they can get an edge."

A 12-time All-Star who last appeared in the major leagues during the opening week of the 2011 season, the 42-year-old Ramirez played winter ball in the Dominican Republic for Aguilas Cibaenas and hit .409 with six homers and 28 RBIs in 147 at-bats.

"In Manny's case the real changes that he made in his life — his habits, his outlook, his behavior, taking more responsibility and accountability for the things he has done and how he wanted to present himself — made us interested in the first place," Epstein said. "If he hadn't, we probably wouldn't have had interest in him joining the organization."

All major league players on 40-man rosters will attend a mandatory education program on domestic violence during spring training.

Major League Baseball said Tuesday the sessions, which will be held for every team under an agreement with the players' association, will be coordinated by San Francisco-based Futures Without Violence.

MLB officials began meeting with groups about domestic violence last fall after a series of high-profile domestic violence cases involving NFL players. Esta Soler, president of Futures Without Violence, said in September that MLB reached out to her group, which works to prevent domestic and sexual violence and child abuse.

Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said Monday there also will be an education program for players who are not on 40-man rosters.

The program begins Thursday with Kansas City, Oakland and the Chicago Cubs participating.

The Big Ten says it is seeking more feedback on whether freshmen should compete in athletics.

The conference released a statement Tuesday indicating it wants to know what others think and will seek input from national leaders inside and outside college athletics before the 2016 NCAA National Convention.

The Big Ten is seeking feedback on establishing "a year of readiness for all sports — or select sports; student-athlete time demands; playing seasons; initial eligibility requirements; and other areas impacting academics on college campuses across the country."

Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany says the conference "won't go it alone on any of these matters" and plans to work with "our colleagues in the NCAA Division I governance structure."

NASCAR suspended Kurt Busch on Friday, just two days before the Daytona 500, hours after a Delaware judge said the former champion committed an act of domestic violence against an ex-girlfriend and there was a "substantial likelihood" of him doing it again.

In a 25-page opinion Friday explaining why he issued a no-contact order, the judge said it was more likely than not that Busch "strangled" Patricia Driscoll in his motorhome at Dover International Speedway in September and smashed her head into a wall.

Busch has denied the alleged assault. He becomes the first driver suspended by NASCAR for domestic violence.

A person familiar with the deal says that the Bucks have traded guard Brandon Knight to Phoenix in a three-team deal that also sends Michael Carter-Williams from Philadelphia to Milwaukee.

The person spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been officially announced.

The Bucks also get guard Tyler Ennis and forward Miles Plumlee from Phoenix.

Milwaukee is a surprising 30-23 with the season set to resume Friday following the All-Star break. The Bucks replace Knight by stocking up on two young guards to work with first-year coach Jason Kidd.

Plumlee also gives the Bucks another body up front with center Larry Sanders' future in doubt following a suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Yahoo! and ESPN first reported the trade.

Amanda Zahui B. scored a career-high 39 points and grabbed a conference-record 29 rebounds as Minnesota upset No. 13 Iowa 93-80 on Tuesday night.

Zahui B.'s rebounding record eclipsed the former Big Ten single-game mark of 26 set by Jerica Watson of Iowa in 2001.

Minnesota (21-6, 10-5 Big Ten) led 48-42 at halftime. Melissa Dixon opened the second half with three 3-pointers as the Hawkeyes (21-5, 12-3) battled to stay close, pulling to 57-54 with about four minutes gone.

Zahui B. added a jumper and a free throw but Samantha Logic nailed a 3-pointer to close to 60-57 before Minnesota's Carlie Wagner added a trey followed by a pair of jump shots from Zahui B. and a 67-57 lead with 11:25 to go.

Wagner finished with 17 points for Minnesota.

Logic led Iowa with 26 points and 13 assists for her 28th career double-double. Logic also grabbed eight rebounds.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell made $35 million in 2013, according to tax returns submitted by the league.

The NFL on Friday released the amount Goodell earned in salary, bonus and pension compensation. Goodell made $35.1 million in 2012, with an additional $5 million in incentive pay and $4.1 million pension payment from the 2011 lockout year that was paid in 2012.

Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, a member of the league's compensation committee, said in a statement that compensation packages are reviewed annually. The committee will "conduct a thoughtful review and make a determination of 2014 compensation in March."

Goodell was heavily criticized this season for his handling of the domestic violence case of former Baltimore Raven Ray Rice.

The league's revenues have approached $10 billion and its TV ratings dominate all other programming.

A 45-year-old woman says she met Reed the evening before last opening day at a suburban bar and they went to a downtown Detroit casino hotel. She says she blacked out after drinking and awoke naked in bed with Reed.

The 29-year-old Reed says their sex was consensual.

He is a free agent after appearing in 32 games last season for Detroit and 17 with Triple-A Toledo.

The Chicago Bears have hired Ben Wilkerson as assistant offensive line coach.

Wilkerson played in 32 games over three NFL seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals (2006) and Atlanta Falcons (2007-08). Wilkerson spent 2014 teaching physical education and serving as an assistant football and track coach for North Shore Senior High School in Houston. He played college football at LSU.

He was offensive line coach at Grambling State from 2012 to 2013, an offensive graduate assistant at LSU in 2010 and an offensive administrative intern there in 2011.

The Bears also announced Wednesday that former offensive line coach Pat Meyer and defensive quality control coach Chris Harris will not return.

Hall of Fame coach Jerry Tarkanian, who built a basketball dynasty at UNLV but was defined more by his decades-long battle with the NCAA, died Wednesday after several years of health issues. He was 84.

Tarkanian put the run in the Runnin' Rebels, taking them to four Final Fours and winning a national championship in 1990.

His son, Danny Tarkanian, says his father fought an infection since he was hospitalized Monday in Las Vegas with breathing difficulty.

His teams were as flamboyant as the city, with light shows and fireworks for pregame introductions and celebrities jockeying for position on the so-called Gucci Row courtside.

He ended up beating the NCAA, too, collecting a $2.5 million settlement after suing the organization for trying to run him out of college basketball.

A person familiar with the decision says the Miami Marlins have been awarded the 2017 All-Star Game, and an announcement by baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred is planned for this week at the team's ballpark.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the decision, first reported by The Miami Herald, had not been announced.

Miami will host the game for the first time. The Marlins were awarded the 2000 game at Pro Player Stadium and then stripped of the honor in 1998 because of uncertainty about the franchise's future.

The Marlins moved into their new ballpark in 2012.

The All-Star Game will be played in Cincinnati this year and in San Diego in 2016, meaning a National League team will host the game in three consecutive seasons.

Another juror has been dismissed in the murder trial of former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez.

Superior Court Judge Susan Garsh said Wednesday she had dismissed a juror for personal reasons that have nothing to do with the case.

That's the same explanation she gave to jurors last week when she dismissed another juror. The judge said that juror had discussed evidence in the case.

Garsh did not give more details Wednesday. She ended the session for the day after about two hours, citing unspecified scheduling issues.

The panel is now made up of 16 jurors. Twelve will ultimately decide Hernandez's fate. Alternates will be selected randomly immediately before deliberations.

Hernandez is accused of the June 2013 killing of Odin Lloyd, who was dating his fiancée's sister.

Basketball analyst Greg Anthony will have a soliciting prostitution charge dropped if he does 32 hours of community service and stays out of trouble for four months.

Anthony, his attorney and a prosecutor told a judge Wednesday that they had agreed to the deal, called a deferred prosecution agreement.

Anthony was arrested for soliciting prostitution at a Washington hotel on Jan. 16. Court documents say he responded to an escort ad authorities placed on a classifieds website.

The 47-year-old former NBA player was suspended by CBS and Turner Sports following his arrest. Anthony apologized in a statement to his family and colleagues, calling his actions a "lapse of judgment."

Anthony had been in the area to announce a basketball game between Michigan State and Maryland in suburban Washington.

A third woman has testified in a South African court that she was sexually abused while a minor by former tennis star and grand slam doubles champion Bob Hewitt.

The South African Press Association says the woman testified Wednesday that she was sexually assaulted while Hewitt gave her tennis lessons in the early 1990s, when she was between 14 and 17 years old.

Hewitt, a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame before the accusations emerged, is on trial charged with two counts of rape and one of sexual assault of girls he coached in cases dating back more than 30 years.

Two other women have testified that Hewitt raped them in the early 1980s, when they were both younger than 16.

Hewitt, now 75, denies the charges.

Little League International has stripped Chicago's Jackie Robinson West of its national title after finding the team falsified its boundary map.

The league made the announcement Wednesday morning, saying the Chicago team violated regulations by placing players on the team who didn't qualify because they lived outside the team's boundaries. Little League International also suspended Jackie Robinson West manager Darold Butler from league activity.

The announcement comes after an investigation that started when a suburban coach alleged the Jackie Robinson West team violated rules by poaching top players from nearby suburbs.

Little League had said in December that an investigation into the Chicago team found no violations.

Jackie Robinson West's championship run captured the attention of the nation and turned the all-black team into heroes in their hometown.

A poll says Pennsylvanians overwhelmingly want Penn State to put back a statue of former football coach Joe Paterno that was removed after Jerry Sandusky's child molestation conviction.

The Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll released Wednesday said the majority — 59 percent to 25 percent — favored restoring the statue to a prominent place on campus.

Pennsylvanians also strongly support a recent deal between Penn State and the NCAA that restored 112 wins to the football team and Paterno's status as winningest coach in major college football.

Paterno's statue outside Beaver Stadium was removed in July 2012, shortly before the university and the NCAA entered into a consent decree that invalidated the wins, fined the school $60 million and temporarily took away some football scholarships.

Quinnipiac surveyed 1,023 residents between Jan. 22 and Feb. 1. Its margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

The Dick's Team USA Ambassador Program is an important component of the partnership for the USOC, which has been looking to reinvent a program that put as many as 200 athletes to work at Home Depot until the big box store ended its long-running sponsorship in 2009.

The deal runs through next year's Rio Olympics. Financial details were not disclosed.

Dick's will also offer sponsorships and sporting equipment to a number of U.S. athletes and will make donations to the Olympic Training Centers.

FIFA is aiming to launch a Women's Club World Cup competition in 2017.

A FIFA task force for women's football set the target Tuesday. The plan could be approved at a March 19-20 meeting of the FIFA executive committee, which includes task force chairwoman Moya Dodd of Australia.

An elite competition would give incentives to clubs, member federations and confederations to develop women's football, FIFA says in a statement.

FIFA has pledged to use World Cup profits to double funding for women's football through 2018.

The men's Club World Cup, played each December, features the champion from each of FIFA's six confederations, plus the host country's league winner.

Real Madrid won the latest edition in Morocco.

The head of security for the Baltimore Ravens, who is accused of groping a stadium worker, is now facing a second-degree assault charge in the same case.

Darren Sanders, a former Baltimore Police Department officer, was charged in late December with a fourth-degree sex offense. The case stems from allegations that he grabbed the woman's breasts and buttocks and kissed her without her permission while she escorted him to his car at the stadium. Sanders denies the allegations.

The additional charge was made public Tuesday when the case was transferred from District Court to Circuit Court for trial.

The Ravens have placed Sanders on paid leave.

Sanders had a role in the Ravens' handling of a domestic violence case involving player Ray Rice after video surfaced showing Rice hitting his then-fiancee in an elevator.

The Minnesota Wild have placed left wings Ryan Carter and Jason Zucker on injured reserve.

The moves were made Tuesday before the Wild played at Winnipeg. Defenseman Stu Bickel and forward Brett Sutter were recalled from AHL affiliate Iowa to add some depth.

Both Carter and Zucker were hurt in the first period Monday of the victory over Vancouver, forcing the Wild to play two forwards short for the rest of the game. Coach Mike Yeo said afterward the team didn't expect either player to return "in the near future" from their upper-body injuries.

Despite playing in only nine games with the Wild this season, Bickel ranks second on the team with 46 penalty minutes. Sutter has played in five games with the Wild, recording three assists.

The English Premier League has awarded the domestic television rights to Sky and BT in three-year deals worth 5.136 billion pounds ($7.8 billion).

To show matches from the 2016-17 season, the broadcasters are paying 70 percent more than their current three-season deals are worth.

To show 154 live games between 2013 and 2016, Sky and BT agreed in 2012 to pay 3.018 billion (then $4.7 billion).

Now, they can show 168 of the 380 matches live, with Sky winning the right to broadcast 126 of the games.

The league has yet to open the bidding for foreign broadcasters, which can show all 380 games each season live.

Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus will stand trial for reckless endangerment nearly a year after he crashed his car into a tree during an alleged race with a teammate.

Dareus appeared briefly in Hamburg Town Court on Tuesday but did not speak as a judge set a May 19 trial date for the misdemeanor count.Dareus' lawyer, Michael Caffery, turned down an offer to plead guilty to reckless driving early on, and in December, Caffery said he was still talking with the Erie County District Attorney's office about resolving the case without a trial.

Dareus, the Bills' first-round draft pick in 2011, was charged and also issued numerous traffic violations after crashing his 2012 Jaguar into a tree during an alleged race with teammate Jerry Hughes not far from Ralph Wilson Stadium on May 30.

The record was previously held by cycling greats Fausto Coppi, Jacques Anquetil and Eddy Merckx. The UCI changed the rules last year, allowing competitors to ride bikes that can be used for endurance track events.

Dennis said "I didn't have time to enjoy because it was a lot of pain. I hope now that the record will stay for a while."

Australian Jack Bobridge fell just short of the Brandle's record last month after covering 51.3 kilometers.

Local favorite Richard Gasquet won the Open Sud de France when Jerzy Janowicz retired ill while trailing 3-0 in the first set on Sunday.

The fourth-seeded Gasquet, who did not lose a set this week, lifted the trophy for the third time after winning in 2006, when the tournament was held in Lyon, and 2013.

Janowicz retired after losing 14 straight points as Gasquet, who was born in the nearby city of Beziers, raced to a 3-0, 30-0 lead.

The big server from Poland said "I'm extremely disappointed because I felt pretty OK the whole week. Two days ago, I got sick. I haven't slept in almost two days. I had a fever and the flu and I'm so weak. There was not much that I could do today."

Canard also won two weeks ago in Oakland. The Honda racer has five career 450SX victories — the first three in 2011.

Canard took the lead from Roczen on the fourth of 20 laps, getting inside position on the Suzuki rider after a side-by-side battle. Roczen won the first two of the three Anaheim races.

KTM's Ryan Dungey was third, followed by Kawasaki's Chad Reed and Honda's Eli Tomac. Dungey held onto the lead in the season standings, nine points ahead of Roczen and 18 ahead of Canard after six events.

Yamaha's Cooper Webb won the Western Regional 250SX race for his second straight victory and fourth in the first six races. The 19-year-old Webb increased his season lead to 30 points over KTM's Jessy Nelson

Racing after a hard hit in an over-the-bars wreck in practice, Webb took the lead from Kawasaki's Tyler Bowers with six laps left. KTM's Shane Mcelrath was second, and Bowers slipped to third. Nelson was eighth.

Rob Gronkowski puck-tuated a Super Bowl victory with a spike on the ice.

The star tight end and several of his New England Patriots teammates were honored by the Bruins before their game against the New York Islanders on Saturday night in a pregame ceremony in Boston.

Gronkowski emphatically spiked the pregame ceremonial puck — as he does with the football when he scores a touchdown — to the delight of the sellout crowd at TD Garden. He later spiked a promotional pizza box when he was shown on the Jumbotron after he was selected as fan of the game, a 2-1 victory by the Bruins.

Gronkowski and other Patriots such as defensive-end linebacker Rob Ninkovich and defensive end Chandler Jones wore Bruins jerseys with their Patriots numbers on them.

The Patriots beat the Seattle Seahawks 28-24 in the Super Bowl.

A plea deal announced Friday avoids trial on felony charges that Bilzerian, a 34-year-old Instagram celebrity, and 36-year-old Jeremy Guymon illegally blew up a tractor-trailer cab with a homemade explosive in the desert.

A prosecutor and attorneys for the two men told a Las Vegas judge that Bilzerian will record a public service announcement for the federal Bureau of Land Management. It will advise what not to do on public land.

Defense attorneys David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld entered no-contest pleas for them to misdemeanor failing to extinguish a fire, and paid a combined $20,000 in restitution.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell will spend 15 months on probation in a first-offender's program stemming from his August arrest with former teammate LeGarrette Blount.

Bell's driver's license will also be suspended for 60 days. But under terms of the program, he can petition the court to have his arrest record expunged if he completes the probation without incident.

Defense attorney Robert Del Greco Jr. said Friday that Bell will now likely face up to a two-game NFL suspension.

Bell and Blount were arrested Aug. 20 after a motorcycle officer in Ross Township smelled marijuana coming from a vehicle Bell was driving.

Blount was released and signed with New England in November.

Blount had his marijuana possession charge dismissed last week after completing 50 hours' community service.

Four members of the Iowa women's field hockey team have filed a federal gender bias complaint over the firing of their coach.

As first reported by ESPN on Thursday, players Natalie Cafone, Chandler Ackers, Jessy Silfer and Dani Hemeon filed the complaint with the U.S. Department of Education last week.

They allege the firing of coach Tracey Griesbaum is part of a pattern in which strong female coaches have faced discrimination and been fired.

Athletic director Gary Barta fired Griesbaum in August, after an investigation into allegations of verbal abuse by former players. The university has defended the firing, saying Barta took action to protect players.

But Griesbaum's supporters say she's done nothing wrong and is the victim of a double standard.

University officials have repeatedly rejected gender bias claims.

Running back Sheldon Croney and offensive lineman Jaypee Philbert helped Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads salvage a recruiting class that took some late hits.

Five players who had committed to Iowa State changed their minds in recent weeks, but getting Philbert, a 6-foot-4, 305-pounder from Coffeyville, Kansas, Community College, helped ease that sting, as did this week's commitment from Croney, who rushed for more than 2,000 yards in each of his final two high school seasons in Bakersfield, California.

But even as Rhoads announced his 25-player class Wednesday, he revealed that wide receiver Tad Ecby and running back DeVondrick Nealy have left the team. Their departures follow the dismissal last month of safety T.J. Mutcherson and wide receiver P.J. Harris.

All four players were major contributors.

The speaker of the Wisconsin Assembly says Gov. Scott Walker's plan for a new Milwaukee Bucks arena has "zero chance" of passing in its current form.

Robin Vos said Wednesday that the Republican-controlled Assembly will only go along if the city of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County also help pay for the stadium.

Walker's proposal is to have the state borrow $220 million in bonds to help pay for the stadium.

Republican Sen. Tom Tiffany, a member of the Legislature's budget committee, says he wants to see the state commitment for the Bucks less than half that — closer to $100 million.

Vos says there's a good chance the state will provide some money to help the Bucks build a new stadium.

He says he's assuming the league is going to figure out how officials will be in charge of the footballs from start to finish.
