Marshalltown school district fighting obesity

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) — The Marshalltown school district is focusing on getting students and their families moving more because statistics show roughly half the young people are obese or overweight.

School officials are trying to find ways to encourage families to get more active.

The district's Matt Tullis says he knows the schools can't do it all. Families will play an important role in getting kids active.

Tullis says about 33 percent of youth nationwide are obese or overweight. In the Marshalltown district, about 47 percent of students fit that description.

The school district has invested in more than 4,000 pedometers, and it is working with community partners to encourage kids to move more.
