DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines City Council members have given an Urbandale man convicted of drunken driving and other violations a chance to take over his father's limousine company.

The council last month voted to create a probationary permit for limousine and taxi companies and to issue the first to Brady Johnson.

Several council members said they received calls from people who vouched for Johnson's character and business plan. City Manager Rick Clark, however, had recommended denying Johnson's permit based on his criminal record and lack of experience.

Johnson intends to operate NPI Limo Service LLC after buying it from his father's company.

The 24-year-old Johnson declined to comment about his record or the city's action.

The probationary permit can be revoked at any time.
