Iowa senators seek detail of secret settlements

by KIX101.1 /1230 KFJB News Department posted Mar 27 2014 10:06AM

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Senate Democratic lawmakers, and at least one Republican, are pushing Gov. Terry Branstad's administration to explain why more than 320 state workers have been fired since he took office in 2011.

The lawmakers who spoke on the Senate floor Wednesday also want details about more than $400,000 given to workers who agreed to keep quiet about their firings.

Sen. Matt McCoy says Mike Carroll, director of the Department of Administrative Services, was asked to appear Thursday before the Senate Government Oversight Committee but he put them off until next week.

Democratic Sen. Robert Hogg questions where state agencies found the money. He says it's the duty of the Legislature to scrutinize spending.

Republican Sen. Sandra Greiner, of Keota, says the Legislature shouldn't adjourn until it's clear why workers were fired.
