Iowa drivers' chances of hitting deer have dropped

by KIX101.1/ 1230 KFJB News Department posted Oct 2 2013 10:27AM

New data show Iowa remains among the top states for drivers' chances of striking a deer, but the likelihood has dropped.

State Farm Insurance said in rankings released Monday that Iowa ranks No. 3 behind West Virginia and Montana.

State Farm spokesperson Ann Avery said that Iowa was ranked No. 4 last year, but has made the way up to three. She does say that this is a unique situation as Iowa's number on the list has gone up, but the precentage likelihood of hitting a deer has gone down.

Avery reccomends paying close attention when in deer crossing areas and to remember that deer travel in herds and where there is one deer, there are probably others around. She also reminds us that while an accident involving a deer could occur at any time, deer are most active between sixand nine.

State Farm's projections are based on licensed driver counts from the federal government and State Farm's claims data.
