Iowa considers 'diploma privilege' for law grads

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) The Iowa Supreme Court is seeking input on a plan that would allow graduates from the state's two law schools to automatically practice without having to pass the bar exam.

Chief Justice Mark Cady announced Tuesday the court would gather comments on the plan through July 14, and hold a public hearing Aug. 27.

The change would mark a huge perk for law graduates from the University of Iowa and Drake University. The so-called "diploma privilege" rule has been recommended by an Iowa State Bar Association committee, which said it would help lawyers pay off student debt. Only Wisconsin has a similar rule after many other states have ended the practice.

Graduates from out-of-state law schools would still have to pass the bar exam before they could practice in Iowa.
