Iowa advised not to license any new casinos

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A consultant says Iowa should focus on reinvesting in existing casinos rather than license any new operations.

Rich Baldwin is managing director of Union Gaming Analytics, and he told the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission on Thursday that, "We do not believe there are any underserved counties in the state of Iowa."

Representatives from Marquette Advisors echoed concerns that new casinos would simply take business from existing casinos.

The consultants were hired by the state regulators to conduct independent evaluations of Iowa's gambling markets.

Backers of two proposed casinos disagreed with the consultants, telling the commission the evaluations were based on incomplete data. The officials from Cedar Rapids and Jefferson have said their projects would create hundreds of jobs and spur growth.
