Iowa State proposes new biosciences building, dorm

~  AMES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa State University is proposing plans to build an $80 million center dedicated to the biosciences and a $50 million residence hall.

Board of Regents materials released Tuesday show ISU is asking permission to proceed with planning to construct the Biosciences Center for Advanced Teaching and Research and add 700 beds in a second Buchanan Hall building.

The documents say the plans are needed as a result of ISU's enrollment growth.

The biosciences center would add space for classrooms, research laboratories and meeting space in programs that have seen increased student interest, such as biology and biochemistry. Gov. Terry Branstad has proposed $2 million in his budget for planning.

The residence hall would help meet rising demand for on-campus housing that has caused the university to lease and build apartments.
