The New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins combined for five home runs in the Bronx on Monday night, but the game was decided by a simple grounder.

Eduardo Nunez couldn't make a clean stop of Chase Headley's hard smash up the middle in the bottom of the 10th inning, allowing the winning run to score in the Yankees' 8-7 triumph over the Twins.

Brian McCann drove in the Yankees' first five runs, delivering a three-run homer in the first inning and a two-run single in the third. McCann also threw out three runners trying to steal.

Homers by Miguel Sano, Aaron Hicks and Trevor Plouffe helped the Twins go ahead 7-5 before Carlos Beltran tied it with a two-run blast in the sixth.

It was a short and painful night for Yankees rookie pitcher Bryan Mitchell. He sustained a nasal fracture when he was hit in the head by a line drive off the bat of Nunez in the second inning. Mitchell needed help getting down the dugout steps as he pressed a towel against his bloody face.

The outcome gives the AL East-leading Yankees a one-game lead over Toronto and dropped the Twins 12 ½ games behind the AL Central-leading Royals.

Jason Day held at least a share of the 54-hole lead in each of the last three majors. This time, he closed the deal.

Day has won the PGA Championship with a record-setting performance that left him three shots ahead of reigning Masters and U.S. Open champion Jordan Spieth (speeth). The 27-year-old Australian closed with a 5-under 67 for a 20-under total, breaking Tiger Woods' major championship record for most strokes under par. Woods finished at 19-under when he captured the 2000 British Open at St. Andrews.

Day started the final round with a two-shot lead and continued to extend that advantage. He birdied the par-5 16th hole to get to minus-20 before closing with back-to-back pars.

Day showed his emotions following his first major victory. He closed the U.S. Open in June with a 74 to finish tied for ninth and had to settle for a fourth-place tie at the British Open last month before conquering Whistling Straits.

Spieth fell short in his bid to join Ben Hogan and Woods as the only players to win three majors in the same season. However, his second-place showing allowed him to pass Rory McIlroy as the world's top-ranked golfer.

Frank Gifford was a versatile football player who parlayed his matinee-idol looks into an even longer television career. Gifford's family announced that the Pro Football Hall of Famer died of natural causes Sunday morning at age 84.

Gifford was a 1951 All-American at Southern California and the top draft pick of the New York Giants in 1952. He averaged almost 50 minutes a game as a halfback, flanker and defensive back in 1953, three years after he was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player. Gifford helped the Giants reach the NFL title game five times, winning it in 1956.

He was named to the Pro Bowl at three different positions in his career, defensive back, offensive halfback and flanker. Six times he was named either first or second team All-NFL.

His good looks led to numerous endorsement deals and an entry into broadcasting. He was in NFL television booths for CBS and later became the voice of ABC's Monday Night Football broadcasts for 27 years until 1997, 20 years after he was elected to the Hall of Fame.
