Indianola council to reconsider pet ordinance

by KIX101.1 /1230 KFJB News Department posted Aug 4 2014 10:07AM

INDIANOLA, Iowa (AP) — Indianola city leaders are deciding whether they will enforce a ban on pet chickens and ducks within city limits.

Des Moines city officials knew resident kept birds as pets but hadn't enforced the ordinance. That changed in June when the city ordered a family to get rid of its three ducks and three hens.

A neighbor tells the station that the bird droppings cause the surrounding area to smell bad. The family has started an online petition opposing the city's ban.

The city will hold a forum on Aug. 18 for public comment on the fowl issue. Mayor Kelly Shaw tells the station that council members will consider a change to the existing ordinance.
