Alex Rodriguez returned to the New York Yankees after an absence of more than 17 months, lining a single into short left field in his first at-bat and going 1 for 2 with a walk in a 3-1 spring-training loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.

Greeted by a 10-second mix of boos and cheers from the crowd of 9,673 as he stepped into the batter's box for his first game following a one-year drug suspension, Rodriguez was wearing the Yankees' white uniform with pinstripes for the team's exhibition season home opener rather than the usual dark blue jersey used in exhibition games.

Rodriguez swung at the first four of 10 pitches he saw in three plate appearances. Batting second as New York's designated hitter, he swung past a pair of 91 mph pitches from Philadelphia's Kevin Slowey in the first inning.

He lined a soft single to left on an 89 mph 0-2 offering that was over the plate.

The Detroit Tigers have released Joel Hanrahan from a minor league contract and said the right-hander will have his second Tommy John surgery on March 18.

Hanrahan had his right elbow ligament replaced in May 2013 while with Boston, when he also had his right flexor tendon repaired. Detroit signed him to a $1 million, one-year contract last May, but he never appeared in a game. The Tigers agreed in November to a minor league contract for $18,000 a month with a provision for a $1 million deal if added to the 40-man roster.

Hanrahan's fastball averaged 97-98 mph before he got hurt. Manager Brad Ausmus said before Wednesday's game with the Baltimore Orioles that Hanrahan could have helped the Tigers if he had been healthy.

"He's going to get the surgery, rehab and reconsider what's next on his agenda — whether he's going to try and play again or not," Ausmus said.

Hanrahan is 22-18 with a 3.85 ERA and 100 saves in seven seasons with Washington, Pittsburgh and Boston.

The Minnesota Vikings have agreed with the Buffalo Bills to trade quarterback Matt Cassel next week for an undisclosed draft pick.

The Vikings announced the deal on Wednesday, six days before NFL transactions can begin with the start of the new league year. The trade can't be completed until then, but the announcement wouldn't have been made if there were potential roadblocks for the deal.

The trade also wouldn't have been initiated had the Vikings not been confident in Teddy Bridgewater, the first-round draft pick who took over as the starter in the third game of last season after Cassel broke his left foot. Cassel spent two years with the Vikings, taking over in 2013 after Christian Ponder struggled to keep the job.

The new flat-seam ball in college baseball is having the desired effect, with teams hitting 40 percent more home runs so far this season.

The NCAA announced Wednesday that teams are hitting a home run about every other game. Last year, teams homered about once every three games through the first three weeks of the season.

The actual average is 0.47 home runs per team compared with 0.33 at this point in 2014. Last season's final average of 0.39 per team was a record low.

The NCAA approved use of the flat-seam ball in an attempt to punch up a game that has seen steep declines in offense since new bat standards took effect in 2011. Studies show the flat-seam ball travels 20 feet farther than the old raised-seam ball.

ESPN is getting back into broadcasting professional hockey after landing the U.S. rights for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

The NHL and NHL Players' Association, who are overseeing the eight-team international tournament, jointly announced the decision Wednesday. ESPN was selected ahead of NBC Sports Group, which is in the midst of a 10-year contract to broadcast NHL regular-season and playoff games through 2020-21.

ESPN was the NHL's U.S. broadcaster from 1992 through the league's lockout that wiped out the entire 2004-05 season.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said ESPN was selected after NBC executives said they could encounter scheduling conflicts to broadcast the tournament which will be held in Toronto, and run from Sept. 17 to Oct. 1.

Rogers Sportsnet and French-language TVA Sports were awarded the Canadian broadcasting rights.

Jim Harbaugh took a break from rescuing Michigan's football team to come to the aid of two people hurt in a traffic accident.

The Wolverines' new head coach and sports staff member James Minick were driving on Interstate 94 in Ann Arbor on Tuesday when they saw a Jeep Cherokee spin, crash and overturn on the slippery roadway.

The station says Harbaugh and Minick helped a 73-year-old woman get out of the vehicle and used their coats to keep her warm until an emergency crew arrived.

The men also helped the 53-year-old driver, who was partially ejected from the SUV. The station says both driver and passenger were hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Harbaugh was hired after Michigan went 5-7 last season under Brady Hoke.

The Southeastern Conference is moving up the start times for two opening-round games in its women's basketball tournament as a winter storm bears down on central Arkansas.

The first game of the tournament, between Auburn and Florida, will tip off Wednesday at 4 p.m. Central — two hours earlier than initially scheduled.

The day's second game, between Alabama and Vanderbilt, will start 25 minutes after the Auburn-Florida game ends.

This year's tournament is at Verizon Arena in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Forecasters say the area could receive 2-4 inches of snow and sleet this afternoon and evening.

The conference said people who hold tickets for Wednesday's session but are unable to attend can trade them for general admission seats at any later session.

Victims of the Boston Marathon bombing have arrived at court for opening statements in the trial of the suspect.

Two busloads of people hurt in the bombings arrived at the federal courthouse at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. They entered through a side entrance, away from reporters and photographers gathered at the main entrance.

Marc Fucarile (FYOO'-kuh-ril), who lost a leg in the attack, went in the front entrance, but did not comment to reporters.

Lawyers for suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev have made it clear they will try to show that at the time of the bombings he was influenced by his older brother, Tamerlan, who died following a shootout with police days after the bombings.

Prosecutors say Dzhokhar was an equal and willing participant in the plot that killed three and hurt more than 260.

A New Jersey high school football program that had its season canceled amid hazing and sexual assault allegations is getting a new coach.

The Sayreville school board on Tuesday night approved Chris Beagan out of 45 applicants. The 1990 Sayreville graduate has been head coach at Monroe since 2008.

Beagan says he plans to meet soon with his new players.

Beagan replaces George Najjar, who was suspended with pay when officials began investigating his football program in October.

The team's 2014 season was canceled days before seven players were accused of hazing and sexually assaulting four teammates inside the locker room. The boys will be tried in juvenile court.

Najjar was transferred as a physical education teacher at the high school to an elementary school.

Noah is going through a difficult season after surgery on his left knee in the offseason, and told L'Equipe newspaper on Wednesday he is focusing on his NBA career.

The 30-year-old Noah, whose only appearance with France at a major tournament was at the 2011 EuroBasket, said "the French team is a great experience, but it has never been my priority."

France technical director Patrick Beesley asked Noah to decide on his availability for the Sept. 5-20 tournament before the end of March, and made clear he won't be selected for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics if he skips the EuroBasket.

Noah is contracted to the Bulls through the 2015-16 season.

A person with knowledge of the situation says that Adrian Peterson is scheduled to meet with Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman and coach Mike Zimmer in Houston on Wednesday.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because neither side was publicly discussing the process.

Peterson has been disenchanted with the Vikings after he missed almost all of last season while facing child abuse charges in Texas.

Peterson was suspended by the NFL, but a federal judge ruled last week that the arbitrator in the case erred by applying a personal conduct policy that was adopted after Peterson beat his 4-year-old son.

He has again been placed on paid leave while the NFL appeals the ruling, opening the door for the Vikings to meet with him.

USA Today first reported the scheduled meeting.

The type of asset swap New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Tom Benson is attempting to try to regain complete control of his business interests from recently estranged heirs is being challenged in a new lawsuit in Texas.

The lawsuit has been brought by former San Antonio mayor Phil Hardberger and estate layer Art Bayern, whom a Texas judge recently appointed as co-receivers of one of the trusts Benson set up for his daughter Renee.

They argue Tom Benson should not be able to swap promissory notes for shares of businesses that he'd previously placed in trust for his heirs.

Such swaps were initiated in January, after Benson disowned his daughter and her two children, who are now suing him in both Texas and Louisiana.

A mechanical problem forced a charter plane carrying the Evansville University men's basketball team to turn around and land in Waterloo.

The team spent Wednesday night at a hotel after an uneventful landing at Waterloo airport. The team was headed home to Indiana after losing to Northern Iowa 68-57 in nearby Cedar Falls. On board were three crew members and 22 passengers.

The turboprop was chartered from Corporate Flight Management, of Smyrna, Tennessee. Spokesman Matt Chaifetz told said on Thursday that the plane had gotten blowing snow inside the mechanism that spins the blades. The pilots noticed a vibration they couldn't identify after takeoff, so they returned to Waterloo.

Chaifetz says the plane will be back in the air later Thursday.

The Drake Relays is adding a women's 800-meter race to this year's meet.

Officials announced Tuesday that they've lined up eight of the top 10 800-meter runners in the U.S. The field will include Ajee Wilson and Brenda Martinez, the second and third-ranked 800 runners in the world.

Meet officials also say that the world's top-ranked 110-meter hurdler, Pascal Martinot-Lagarde of France, will compete at Drake.

American LaShawn Merritt will be back to defend his meet title in the 400.

The Drake Relays will be held from April 23-25 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
