IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — University of Iowa officials say the institution raised nearly $516 million in funding from outside sources in the 2014 fiscal year — nearly $10 million more than last year.

The biggest gains were in research funding, which makes up the majority of external funding. The university's research funding increased by $7.3 million in 2014, compared with a $14 million drop in 2013 from the previous year.

Outside funding for 2014 also includes $1.1 million more — or a 47.5 percent increase — in funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation from 2013.

University President Sally Mason and Vice President for Research and Economic Development Daniel Reed announced the increases during a Friday news conference.
