Des Moines airport board backs new terminal

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Des Moines Airport Authority Board has unanimously approved a plan for a $468 million terminal, but officials acknowledge they don't know how to pay for the project.

The plan approved Tuesday would replace the current 66-year-old terminal with a terminal on the airport's south end. Depending on ridership growth, officials say construction could begin in 2022.

The new terminal would have 14 gates with plans to expand to 18 gates and room for future growth. The current terminal has 11 gates.

Even with federal aviation grants, increased airline fees and other airport revenue, there is a $202 million funding gap.

Airport Executive Director Kevin Foley says money could come from other state and federal sources.

The airport had 2.2 million passengers in 2013.
