Dead Tree Stump to Become a Work of Art

Not all tree stumps are doomed to be sent to the wood chipper. Some tree stumps are destined to become works of art. And some of these works of art are made by a delicate artists tool known as: the chainsaw.
Once again, yhe Marshalltown Parks and Recreation Department plans to create a masterpiece from a dead piece of wood.
“I brought this to you last year,” says Terry Grey, Director of the Marshalltown Department of Parks and Recreation, at the recent City Council meeting.
“We had a tree that was carved by a chainsaw artist, and it turned out very, very well.”
With plans now in the works for the same artist to return and create another masterpiece, Grey points out this is an event special to Marshalltown after some recent look a-likes in other cities in the area.
“This is an original to Marshalltown, I always say the best ideas a stolen ones.”
But that was not meant as a jab to other communities as Grey admits, “I get ideas from lots of places and it’s great to see them come to fruition in our community, too.”
Councilman Joel Greer added it’s not only a piece of art to look at once it’s complete; it’s also entertaining to watch it all come together.
“I’ve had to pleasure of watching him do the last one, and he’s fun to watch too. So, I encourage kids of any age to go out and watch him. He’s really an artist.”
Last years tree depicted the three little pigs. This years sculpture will portray a tower, with a dragon and princess. It will also include a pig to represent the sculpture’s sponsor, JBS. The final touches and unveiling will take place on May 17th at the “Kids to Parks Day” event.
