Davenport mayor wants city to help immigrant kids

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — The mayor of Davenport wants area agencies to help Central American children who are fleeing their home countries, but some other city leaders aren't so sure that's a good idea for the city.

Obama administration officials say they're struggling to keep up with the surge of immigrants at the Mexican border, as children show up by the tens of thousands from violence-torn Central America.

Davenport Alderman Bill Edmond told Davenport television station KWQC that he opposes Mayor Bill Gluba's proposal and said that, "If need be, I will stand in front of the buses myself."

Gluba held a meeting Tuesday with representatives of 15 Quad-City agencies to discuss the Caring Cities Campaign. Another meeting is scheduled for Monday.
