DNR to hold final 2 hearings on clean water rules

by KIX101.1 /1230 KFJB News Department posted May 12 2014 10:03AM

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources continues to hold hearings next week on proposed new rules to regulate confinement livestock farms in Iowa.

The DNR says the rule will bring Iowa into compliance with federal clean water regulations but environmental groups and others say the rules aren't strict enough to prevent manure and fertilizer runoff from contaminating rivers and lakes.

The final two hearings are set for 6 p.m. Monday in Calmar and 6 p.m. Tuesday in Washington.

Dozens of speakers turned up at meetings in Mason City, Spencer, Carroll and Des Moines last week. Many opposed the rules and wanted them to be rewritten to be more stringent.

A DNR spokesman says the agency has received more than 2,000 written comments so far.
