Crews Let Unwanted N. Iowa Grain Elevator Burn

by KIX101.1 /1230 KFJB News Department posted Mar 12 2014 12:13PM

LU VERNE, Iowa (AP) — Fire crews let an empty grain elevator burn down in the northern Iowa city of Lu Verne.

The fire began late Tuesday at the New Cooperative Grain Elevator in Lu Verne, a Kossuth County city about 30 miles north of Fort Dodge.

The owners of the elevator planned to tear down the structure and were in the process of gutting it when workers apparently sparked the fire.

Several nearby fire departments responded, along with the Lu Verne Fire Department, but crews opted to let the structure burn since it was going to be demolished, anyway.

There were no injuries.
