Campaign videos get repurposed for independent ads

by KIX101.1 /1230 KFJB News Department posted Mar 26 2014 10:16AM

WASHINGTON (AP) — Independent groups in competitive Senate races in Kentucky, Alaska and Iowa are running ads that borrow heavily from their favored candidates' websites.

Candidates in North Carolina, Minnesota and elsewhere are also offering free, high-quality video to outside groups.

The practice reflects the relentlessness of the 2014 elections, in which Republicans need to gain only six seats to win control of the Senate and have a profound influence over the last two years of President Barack Obama's presidency.

While the groups and super PACs cannot legally coordinate with the candidates, the Federal Election Commission rules let them borrow the glossy, made-for-TV video footage.

The lax rules have frustrated watchdog groups. But the FEC has not blocked outside groups from using the footage.
