Branstad reserving judgment on medical marijuana

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Terry Branstad is reserving judgment on signing a bill to legalize the use of a form of marijuana oil to treat chronic epilepsy until he sees the legislation lawmakers passed.

Branstad says he's wary of doing anything that might have unintended consequences or could increase drug abuse.

Legislators opposing the bill say some people may get the wrong message that if marijuana can be used as medicine it might be OK to use as a recreational drug.

The narrowly crafted bill allows the medical use of oil derived from the cannabis plant as a last-resort treatment for seizures caused by chronic epilepsy. It cannot be smoked and doesn't create a high.

Branstad has 30 days to consider the bill which passed the House 75-20 and the Senate 38-8.
