Branstad Immersed in STEM Education

by KIX101.1 /1230 KFJB News Department posted Oct 28 2013 4:20PM
Governor Terry Branstad visited HOWGAN SSC to hear about educational efforts in the science and engineering fields. After recently visiting countries like China and India, where engineering is an important field, Governor Branstad says that we have some catching up to do.

"Both of those countries have put and emphasis on that," Branstad says," and they are training a lot of people in these fields, and they see these as the jobs of the future."

When Branstad spoke, he emphasized his belief that these are the jobs of the future. He said that these are the jobs people are looking for and, "STEM jobs are better paying jobs and they are going to be more of those in the future."

The future is bright for students who want to get involved in these fields. According to Branstad, "We need to get the word out, and we need to motivate more Iowa students." This motivation will get students more enthusiastic in what STEM stands for: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. "We need to take these science, math, engineering, and these kinds of fields because it's absolutely critical ." And as Branstad pushed, this is why we have the STEM initiative in Iowa in the first place.

Branstad says that with the installation of the STEM program it will improve education in the fields where U.S.. Students have been suffering, and we can start right here in Iowa. "I'm really excited in the interest that is generating and I think it's making more kids aware that there are good jobs available, or will be in their community, if they can get the right education," Branstad said.

Branstad will be back in Marshalltown on November 18th for the STEM and Project Lead the Way Open House at Marshalltown High School.
