An Osage woman is recovering after being injured in a house fire.

The fire occurred Sunday in Osage.

Osage Police Officer Mike Niemeyer says he arrived to find the home filled with smoke. He found the unconscious woman in an upstairs bedroom.

Osage Fire Chief Kurt Angell says the woman was held in a local hospital overnight for observation.

Police say a neighbor heard Fox's dog barking, saw smoke pouring from the house and then called 911 around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

A defense lawyer says the Boston Marathon bombing suspects' sister denies making phone threats, allegations that have resulted in a harassment charge.

Authorities say Ailina Tsarnaeva (tsahr-neye-EH'-vuh) of North Bergen, New Jersey, claimed that people she knew could bomb the home of a woman who was previously involved with her husband.

Her lawyer, Susan Marcus, said Tuesday that the claim is "uncorroborated."

Bail was set at $5,000.

Tsarnaeva told reporters she had "nothing to say."

Authorities say Tsarnaeva has been required to check in with Massachusetts probation officers since last October after she failed to cooperate with a counterfeiting investigation.

Her brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) has pleaded not guilty in the April 2013 marathon explosions, which killed three people. Her other brother, Tamerlan, died after a gunbattle with police.

The state's largest school district is opting not to participate in a survey of student behavior.

The biannual Iowa Youth Survey, given to sixth-, eighth- and 11-graders, identifies behavior trends and gathers data about risks confronted by Iowa's youth.

Spokesman Phil Roeder for the Des Moines School District said that school officials are conducting their own survey created by the Gallup company. Roeder says the district felt conducting both surveys would be redundant.

About 300 other Iowa districts are taking part in the survey. It will be administered this week through Oct. 31.

In 2012, nearly 71,000 students took the survey, continuing a trend of reduced participation since 2005, when about 98,000 students completed it.

The Iowa Transportation Department has told Tesla Motors to stop offering test drives.

The department said the test drives were illegal because Tesla isn't a licensed auto

dealer in Iowa and because state law bars carmakers from retail sales.

A Tesla spokeswoman told the newspaper that the company doesn't think the statutes apply because the company was offering only three-day test drives, not actually selling cars.

Tesla doesn't sell its electric cars through franchise dealerships. People can buy the Model S online or at one of a handful of Tesla stores around the country.

Tesla is based in Palo Alto, California.

Early voting by absentee ballot will begin in Iowa on Thursday, and the secretary of state is encouraging all eligible voters to participate.

Iowa allows absentee voting by mail and offers early in-person voting at the offices of county auditors beginning the 40th day before Election Day.

Residents have increasingly opted for voting by absentee ballot in recent elections for the convenience and in response to increasing pressure from political parties striving to get as many votes as possible cast by Election Day.

Secretary of State Matt Schultz announced earlier this week that the number of absentee ballots requested by Iowa voters this year is nearly double the number sought 43 days before the 2010 election.

Democrats have in recent election cycles excelled at the strategy but the numbers released Monday show Republican absentee ballot requests are up nearly 145 percent from 2010 to just over 31,000. Democratic requests have climbed nearly 67 percent to nearly 58,000.

West Des Moines officials have decided to use an insecticide to save some city ash trees from a pest that's killed millions of ashes elsewhere in the country.

The city had planned to remove all 1,100 city ashes over four years. But city officials said this week that a product called TREE-age has been working in many cities, including Milwaukee.

John Olds, West Des Moines' urban forestry supervisor, said healthy adult ash trees with diameters of 10 to 12 inches should be able to receive the injection treatments. Costs are not projected to increase with the new strategy, officials said.

The city action comes as the emerald ash borer advances elsewhere in Iowa, with infestations already detected in 13 counties. The beetles are native to Asia and were first detected in Michigan in 2002. Since then the insects have killed more than 50 million ash trees.
