DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Ankeny Regional Airport has been notified it will receive a grant for more than $695,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin announced the grant approval Wednesday. He is a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and the subcommittee that approves funds for transportation projects.

He says ensuring that Iowa's airports have the resources they need to update, repair or replace their facilities is important for safety and efficiency.

The Ankeny airport's funds are intended to improve runway safety.

In addition, Harkin says the state will receive $123,255 to conduct a state system plan study.
