WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Waterloo police say officers shocked a man with a stun gun after the man beat and stabbed a family dog.

38-year-old Michael Jan Menton was arrested Wednesday morning.

Police say Menton was arguing with a woman and her 17-year-old daughter. Police say when Menton shoved the girl, her dog rushed in and bit Menton.

Police say Menton then kicked, punched and stomped the animal before stabbing it. It's not known whether the dog survived.

Police say when officers arrived, Menton refused to show his hands and resisted arrest, leading officers to shoot him with a stun gun.

Menton has been charged with public intoxication, animal torture, interference and assault. He is being held on $5,600 bond.
