WEST POINT, Iowa (AP) — Residents of the southeast Iowa city of West Point are sure to savor the corn they eat at the annual Sweet Corn Festival.

Before the party got started, they had to shuck all of 16½ tons of corn.

Hundreds of Lee County residents turned up Wednesday evening at a seed company to tear off the green husks.

They set down on wooden benches in front of neat rows of corn and got to work.

Doris Boeding, of West Point, has helped shuck corn for many years, saying it's about small-town pride and teamwork.

The 62nd annual festival began Thursday and continues through Sunday.
