Adopting a Pet, a Holiday Gift that Lasts and Lasts

by KIX101.1 /1230 KFJB News Department posted Dec 5 2013 12:28PM
Everyone wants a home for the holidays. Heidi Drager from the Marshalltown Animal Rescue League says there’s no reason to exclude a shelter animal from that.

“We have the animals who are looking for homes,” Drager says, “and they need a place to go and new families to take care of them.”

There are a large variety of pets available at the shelter. From cats and dogs, to guinea pigs and rabbits, these animals are looking for love and a family to call their own.

She says there is a stigma that comes with shelter pets that needs to end. And the holidays are the best time to do that. As stated by Drager, “Just because they’re at the shelter doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with them.”

And according to Drager, the whole adoption process is rather simple. The most difficult part is choosing who to take home as the newest member of the family.

“We ask that you come out and visit the animals and pick somebody out that interests you,” she says, “We have an application process that is a 24-hour process.”

But after that you, and your new pet, are home free.

“Then, the next day hopefully, we can get you sent home with a new puppy, kitten, full grown cat, or guinea pig even.”

Overall, the need to adopt is so important. During the holidays or not. That’s because, as Drager pointed out, “The pet over population is still a problem and if we don’t adopt from shelters then that’s just going to continue to be a problem.”

Then she adds, “We just need to find places for these guys.”

Again, Drager does recommend that you go to the shelter yourself to find the best pet for you and your family. You can also begin your application process online at the Marshalltown ARL website. Or you can fill out the application at the shelter itself.
